I was at a friend's house in Belém this afternoon. She and her family are lifelong Portistas.

So I had to ask... what was her view on João Mário.

She's like, "Well, he's ok. But not someone I will miss. ... and a lot of fellow portistas seem to think we got away with one."

No cap, fr fr.

JOAO MARIO ARRIVES: A STATISTICAL LOOK.

Joao Mario is a Juventus player, having arrived to our Men’s First Team from Porto this summer transfer window. With the Portuguese side, he made 181 appearances following his July 2020 debut, scoring five times and assisting 25 more across all competitions.
Following his arrival, we thought we’d take a deep dive into his numbers to understand our new signing a little more.

JOAO MARIO’S STATS:
• Since the 2019/20 season, only Pepe (119) made more Primeira Liga appearances among Porto defenders than Joao Mario (116).

• Over the same period, Joao Mario delivered the most assists (13) by a Porto defender in the league, ahead of Alex Telles (10).

• He created 115 chances for teammates from open play in Primeira Liga since 2019/20, at least 45 more than any other Porto defender.

• His 32 clear-cut chances created are more than double those of any other Porto defender in that span.

• Joao Mario also played 210 passes into the opposition penalty area, at least 70 more than any defensive teammate.

• In the 2024/25 Primeira Liga, he led Porto in crosses attempted (78) and crosses completed (24) from open play.

• He also ranked first at the club for dribbles attempted (70) and completed (30) during the season.

• Finally, Joao Mario created 16 chances following ball carries of five metres or more – the most of any Porto player.

why do you get that feeling?
I know everyone has been joking about it, but those stats posted are pretty encouraging.

Beyond that, not a single soul here has ever been alerted to his existence prior to this thread being opened and people already hate him it seems from skimming. I'm thinking a Jim Cramer stock pick situation.

Saw him a couple of times at the CWC, wasn’t too impressed. That Porto team was weak defensively, and in that 4-4 game against the Egyptian side, they could’ve easily conceded a few more. He’s clearly very attack-minded, but you don’t just learn to defend at a decent level overnight. We’ll see.

The combination of him, Cambiaso and Savona increase the strength of the attack from the flanks, after Cuadrado and Danilo the flanks have been down, putting Mario in that spot give the team an edge to crossing and flowing the ball from the left side. The attributes of his playing doesn’t fit to take CB role and we have no room for a defender.
