He should have pulled it off. Rakitic would chose us over most EPL sides, we lacked persistence and were too cheap, that's why he's going to EPL.

Let's not blame Marotta, we don't have the money and there's nothing we can do. We have to wait and see if we can get rid of Amauri or sell Sissoko or we'll end up with nothing.

FFS, this is a 22 year old player with a lot of potential and huge experience for his age. He's out of contract and can be bought for free or for cheap in January. You make money for this kind of deal.

Not like it's Dzeko we're talking about anyway....no money. My ass, this is incompetence.

If we have financial problems, we should try going all in on those Bosman players. Also since he's young, willing to play for us and talented with an EU passport we should have tried.

Looking at what we already had, we certainly didn't need the Grosso's, Toni's and now possibly Barzagli's.

Getting Rakitic seemed like a logical deal in the situation we're in. Very cheap (since his contract expires in 6 months), EU passport and his wages were gonna be relatively low, especially considering how he could cover two positions and replace two players. He could have been both our 3rd/4th choice MC and 2nd choice LW.

This kind of players are needed for our bench. If we have 4 such players instead of 8 benchers in the squad, we make it smaller and we save a lot of money to improve the starting XI. Yes, ideally we should have 2 good players for every position, as Inter had last year, but it's clear that we can't have that and we need to find ways to get back to the top. Making the squad smaller by buying versatile players and invest in quality instead of quantity is one of the ways to go, imo.

He could have been a direct sub for Aquilani and play ahead of Marchisio/Pepe on LW.

So really we have only actually signed one guy who in theory fits that category, under Marotta, and he is a short term stop gap.

As for Grosso, hindsight is beautiful but I remember a lot of people were happy with his signing, especially for the price.

It's pretty obvious that our long term objective has been and is to have a younger squad. Whether you think those players (the ones we have actually signed) are useless is a matter of opinion, just like calling Marotta incompetent for not signing a guy you like. You speak as if we were even negotiating for him. Were we?

Oh I agree, he would be an ideal player. It also depends what other clubs are offering a deal, free agents can demand more than usual in wages and signing on fees, agents fees, because there is no transfer fee.
