With Italy currently gearing up to face Malta in Tuesday night’s World Cup 2014 qualifier, Juventus.com takes a look back at a previous meeting between the two nations.
On 24 March 1993, Arrigo Sacchi’s Azzurri took on their Maltese counterparts in Palermo with one Juventus player in the starting line-up: Dino Baggio.
And the midfielder did not have to wait long to make his mark, opening the scoring on 19 minutes courtesy of a well-taken finish. Italy would go on to rifle a further five in a resounding 6-1 victory.
It proved to be a sign of things to come, with Baggio’s three goals inspiring the Bianconeri to a UEFA Cup victory over Borussia Dortmund in May. The following summer he formed part of the memorable Italy side that finished runners-up to Brazil in the 1994 World Cup.
