If history is anything to go by, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli will be confident of steering his charges to a win over Denmark in Milan tomorrow night.
The last time the two sides met in a World Cup qualifier was back in 1980. And just like the Azzurri squad of today, which features eight Bianconeri, the then manager Enzo Bearzot was also able to rely on a strong Juventus presence in his ranks.
Six of Giovanni Trapattoni’s men were named in the starting line-up on that Saturday afternoon in Rome: Dino Zoff, Claudio Gentile, Antonio Cabrini, Gaetano Scirea, Marco Tardelli and Roberto Bettega.
Aiming to silence the boisterous home crowd at the Stadio Olimpico was Danish frontman Preben Elkjær. He would go on to enjoy a successful four-year spell in Italy, making a prominent contribution to Verona’s historic Scudetto triumph in 1985.
However, it was to be Francesco Graziani who grabbed the headlines, with the Torino striker pouncing either side of half-time to secure a 2-0 success.
His first strike came courtesy of a magnificent assist from Gentile, who delivered an inch perfect cross which was slammed home on the volley.
