No fewer than 22 Bianconeri have contributed to Italy’s four world title successes. Of these, nine were in the squad for the 1934 triumph (Borel II, Caligaris, Bertolini, Combi, Ferrari, Monti, Orsi, Rosetta and Varglien II), two for the 1938 victory in France (full-backs Foni and Rava), six in Spain ’82 (Cabrini, Gentile, Tardelli, Rossi, Scirea, Zoff) and five in Germany for the country’s last World Cup glory (Buffon, Camoranesi, Cannavaro, Del Piero and Zambrotta).
Joining the impressive list of names are Deschamps and Zidane, who played vital roles in France’s victory in 1998.
The European Championships, however, have yielded just one Italian triumph, with Ferruccio Valcareggi’s men winning the tournament on home soil in 1968. Three Bianconeri featured in the 22-man squad: Sandro Salvadore, Giancarlo Bercellino and Ernesto Castano. Another two players who shone throughout the competition, Dino Zoff and Pietro Anastasi, would pull on the black and white stripes in the future.
Many Juventus faces formed part of the Euro 2000 squad, coached by the aforementioned Dino Zoff, that was cruelly defeated by France in a tense final. Del Piero, Iuliano and Pessotto were named in the starting line-up on that night in Rotterdam, while Ferrara, Inzaghi, Zambrotta and current manager Conte were also among the travelling party.
The eight Bianconeri involved tonight in Kiev have all played a part in the team’s rise to the final, and will be going all out to bring the trophy home and write their names in the record books.
