Italian Federation OK's Video Evidence To Punish Divers!
8/24/2005 6:56:00 PM
The Italian football federation has taken a revolutionary decision as starting this Sunday divers can be punished using video evidence.
Article 31 of the Italian federation’s regulations was amended to allow video evidence to be used against those divers whose action caused an adversary to be red carded or a penalty kick in his team’s favour.

This is a huge innovation in a league known for its great football, but also for its very theatrical players.

Furthermore, players that use their hands to score a goal or avoid a goal without the referee noticing their foul play, can also be punished through the use of video evidence.

It is still unclear whether on this latter issue game results can be changed if foul play is revealed by the video evidence.

To be honest, I think this has the potential to improve the game. So I am for it. The devil is going to be in its implementation/enforcement, of course.

Ok, here's where the problem lies:

A player dives and thus the game is lost (it may be a lsst cup, or a championship?). Ok, the player will get fined or whatever. But this does not solve the fundamental problem.

There is one main referee running around, and he is unable to follow 22 athletes.

Cameras and people behind them need to watch everything that goes on, and this information to be passed on to the referee through radio. Or, as in American sports, there can be more than one on the field. Take the frickin' power away from one individual!

We live in the 21st century for Christ's sake!
