    Spalletti Rues Defensive Distractions

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was disappointed after seeing his side held by Napoli to a spectacular 4-4 draw.

Roma-Napoli ended in a 4-4 draw and was a highly entertaining match, but obviously it did not leave Giallorossi coach Luciano Spalletti with a good taste in the mouth. Particularly because the team allowed Napoli to get back into the match after taking the lead three times.

Asked whether he thought the team was too insecure, he said: "Sometimes when you are too careful, you are scared of making a mistake and conceding a goal. The lads do their best to correct their mistakes during training, but it can always happen that you concede goals.

"The public always means a lot to us. It's always better to have your fans backing you in the stadium, but we must be able to resolve certain situations even when, like today, there are less fans present. The players are more disappointed than me after tonight, and we will talk about it tomorrow morning."

His final words were on defender Philippe Mexes, who did not have a very good performance tonight: "I'm disappointed, because we make mistakes, even though we train for these situations all the time, we're making avoidable mistakes. Probably we could have handled certain situations better today and made better choices."

    Adriano: I apologise

Adriano has apologised to Coach Roberto Mancini for his angry reaction to a substitution this evening.

The Brazilian had scored the only goal in Inter’s 1-0 victory away to Reggina – his first in six months – but when he walked off the field he ignored Mancini’s outstretched hand and went straight for the bench.

“Nobody likes being substituted,” confessed l’Imperatore. “I want to do so much for this squad, but if I made a mistake, I didn’t do it to intentionally offend anyone.

“With Mancini I have a normal rapport. He makes his choices and I must accept them, as I always have done. He took me off, but I want to do more.”

Adriano had been frozen out of the squad and is not even on the Champions League list after he went off the rails with alcoholism and excessive partying, but assures he is back to his old self.

“I am relaxed now, my family is giving me a hand and I have my head back on my shoulders.”

He had not scored an official goal for Inter since the 2-2 draw with Palermo on April 15 and last season got just six strikes in all competition.

What an ass-tastic defensive performance by Roma tonight. I think I could have scored at least three goals against them. :lazy:

Roma still in shock at thriller

The day after their extraordinary 4-4 draw with Napoli, Roma are still asking themselves what happened at the Olimpico.

The Giallorossi went 1-0 behind after just two minutes, then turned it around to lead three times only to be pegged back on every occasion.

“This is not the real Roma and I cannot explain what happened. It was such a strange game,” said general manager Rosella Sensi.

“We cannot use the lack of fans due to security measures as an alibi, as we need to know how to play away from home as well. We know our strengths and I won’t criticise individuals, I have to reprimand everyone.”

Young goalkeeper Gianluca Curci was one of those accused of a poor performance in the Saturday match.

“We need more concentration and this result was more our fault than to Napoli’s credit,” said the Under-21 international.

“Perhaps I was at fault on the third goal. If I had seen the ball leave his foot, I could have got it.”

Daniele De Rossi also scored thanks to a goalkeeping howler from Gennaro Iezzo, but was in no mood for celebration.

“We make some stupid mistakes, but we’ll see where we are for the Scudetto in May,” added the midfielder (pictured).

“Maybe we were a little soft on the first goal. It is not a problem that we are conceding so many goals lately, I believe it is a coincidence.”

Defender Matteo Ferrari was not so optimistic about the situation now that Roma are five points adrift of Serie A leaders Inter.

“A team that wants to win the Scudetto cannot make mistakes like this.”
