AC is right there. The challenge the Church has is that it's made a longtime business out of infallibility. Or at least the impression of higher authority. So it has every incentive to keep telling us "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. I am the great Oz!"
The modern model today is that everybody, because we are all human, screws up at some time or other. Not "screw up" in the way of raping and torturing children, but more screwing up in mismanaging the response in a horrible way. We've seen Rupert Murdoch drop his invincible armor once he had Edelman public relations come in and tell him the playbook for how best to handle crisis communications humbly when mistakes are made and discovered. The Church still acts as if it is not subject to that, which ultimately is going to render it all the more irrelevant in society.
