Its not like LB's are cursed or something to have a no. 2.. Lupatelli had a no.10 few years ago, don't remember which team he was with though. Does that imply that he started as a striker?

Till the 1994-95 season (included) the numbers of the shirts weren't given to the players at the beginning of the season, but match by match. They went from 1 to 11 (for the starters) and they were given according to the role each player was going to have in that match.
1 is the keeper, 2 is the rightback, 3 is the leftback and so on.
If you go back to see some highlights of that season, you'll see that Ciro had the 2 :wink:


That now Lupatelli has the 10, it's another story

I only remember seeing Ferrara play right back a few times during his career. During the last few seasons of his career, for instance, he only played right-back when Thuram wasn't available and nobody else was either.

As Angela said, he started and played half of his carrer as a rb , the number of the shirt is just a curiosity :wink:

For us he has played as RB just part of the first year, when the CBs were often Kohler and Carrera (he's 42 now and still plays, btw ).

Actually this system is also currently in use by the Italian national team, though only for the friendlies.
