Still can't see how this could be true.
He had some good and bad games over the course of the years so calling for his omission by some I really can't understand. Anyway the club form is the main determinant of who gets the call and that's my point. Who should Prandelli call instead? Aquilani? Nocerino?

As for the NT he had more impact than Marchisio, but people over here disregard Marchisio's abysmal showing last year at Confederation Cup, when he would put in one after another horrific performance and place him into starting 11 by default and never question his status, even though he's spent most of the season as Pogba's sub. The fact is that Montolivo was rather dominant at Euro 2012, putting in great performances vs England and Germany in the process, but after the tournament along with most Italian players, be the cause of it poor fitness level, tactics, he has simply failed to repeat those. But still he is very valuable member.
Granted I have a personal dislike for him so I could be somewhat biased against him, but other than those two games you mentioned (which I've acknowledged), I can't remember other instances where he's made much of an impact in the team - and I've watched pretty much every Italy game under Prandelli.

But you're right though, there isn't really anyone I can say is being robbed by Montolivo being in the national team instead of them. Aquilani & Nocerino are even worse players, to use your examples. And I used to think Poli would be a future Azzurri star, but we can all see that's not happening. Hard to tell if he's really just not that great, or if it's just Milan making him look mediocre, but either way he's not showing he should be in the national team either.

But in the least, I don't think Montolivo should be used as more than a sub in the WC.

Indeed.

It'd be a great match and a pity if they meet sooner than the final. Hopefully either will wipe the floor with Barca.
and i have this feeling he will be an even bigger beast next season... if anyone can stop bayern this season then its Real with him and Ronaldo...
If Bale ever loses his speed he wont be half the player he is now. He lacks the technical ability to adapt his game and still be effective imo. While he has this speed he is quite unbelievable i must say. He has done better than i thought at Madrid this season.

Did you have a personal dislike for him when he was with Fiorentina?

Pirlo was about 25 before he broke into the Italian set-up, and he's probably the best Italian player of the last decade, alongside Buffon.
So there is still time for Poli. Poli started the season well for Milan, and he seems to be getting back in form recently. Aside from the missed chances, he was excellent against Juventus, and it wasn't until he went off injured, that Pirlo could get into the game. It was still 0-0 when he was forced off with the injury.

I suppose when Pirlo was playing for Milan, you probably felt he shouldn't have been in the Italy squad.:facepalm2:

Why are people questioning his qualities is beyond me.
@89man your thoughts on Montolivo as you've probably seen more Milan's games than me?

Montolivo has been awesome the last month or so!

He was also our best player last season.
Stephan was great up until the winter break, and Balotelli made a good impact after January, but Montolivo was consistent throughout the whole season.
He' not Pirlo, but he is able to spray the ball around,he's a good passer, and he's good at keeping possession.
However he gives us something Pirlo never did, he can get stuck in with a tackle and and add bite to the midfield.

There's no doubt in my mind that he should be in the Italy squad this summer.

What? Pirlo is one of my top five favorite players ever. I don't hate players just because they play for a certain club, a lot of my favorites play or played for rival teams or teams I dislike.

And I actually like Poli, I followed him a lot at Samp, still don't know why we didn't pay the 6m to keep him when he was on loan (even as a backup, that's cheap). But most of the time when I watch Milan & he's playing, he doesn't impress me like he used to. Maybe I'm just missing his good performances, but a few of the Milan fans I know are disappointed with his product as well.

Montolivo is nothing but average when he plays for Italy. I hate when people bring up that Germany game, they use that every single time they try to defend him but that was one fucking game where Germany had no answer to us because they were to busy trying to mark Pirlo out of the game while the rest of the team ran riot on them.

Also how is playing well for a 9th place team an achievement? If they were around top 5 i would understand but come on this guy is nothing but a mediocre version of Pirlo. De Rossi-Veratti/pirlo-Motta should be our midfield for the WC. Montlivo can paly a bit part role but he should not be starting for us simply not good enough. I would play Marchisio over him as well every single time.

Nobody seems to remember the Brazil game in the confeds when he couldn't do one pass without losing the ball. As soon as he was being pressed he folded faster than u can say Montolivo. He is good with time and space on the ball but in a tough game when he is given little space and time he will struggle badly unlike Veratti/Pirlo when they are in the same situation as him.

There is a reason he went on a free to Ac Milan because nobody wanted to pay money for him.

Exactly what I've seen. I believe I've written something similar about him.

Yup, the reason is called contract expiry, Montolivo didn't want to renew with Viola and Milan pounced upon that opportunity. Like we did with Pirlo.

Pirlo was old and apparently passed it. Montolivo was in the prime of his career.

Pirlo was old and apparently passed it.
Pirlo's performances had been poor for Milan in the last season or two.
He'd have moments of brilliance, but he wasn't consistent, like before.
This is coming form a guy who loves Pirlo.

Like he said, he was looking for a new environment, and a fresh start i guess.
