The Portugal-Chile friendly was a snorefest. But Portugal-Argentina had more action and entertainment than anything I saw in WC 2010.

Football is entertainment. We just fawn over Messi the way that teen girls fawn over Justin Bieber. It's no more glorious than that. The results are important, but there's a reason we all loathed Capello at the helm of Juve even while we never saw 2nd place throughout his reign.

Watch it again, he was just protecting his face. The ball was gonna hit his face/chest anyway. But this is incident was just one of many. I don't know where they get these referees from. And Algeria, what a smameful team. I can't remember once where they actually played the ball. They looked like animals released on a football pitch, couldn't play the ball and didn't let anyone else do it. Didn't expect anything else really tbh, always this shit with Algeria. Shame really to call them a football team.

You don't need goals for exciting football. And you don't need some official competition either. Sure, it helps. But seeing the US and Portugal play Argentina, I cannot say that either team weren't putting an effort in to win and there was nothing at stake.

But to see players go for creative chances, to run as fast as they can against the best in the world and not have to worry about playing the full 90 minutes, etc. -- some friendly matches in the past year have turned my usual thinking (mostly like yours) on its head.

Competition does not breed better football. At least that's my conclusion from 2010-11.

You're talking about international football though. That is usually dull, competitive or not. Club football is much better.
