Five Bianconeri were named in Italy’s starting-line up for last night’s 2-0 win over Malta.
For the Azzurri’s second World Cup 2014 qualifying fixture, Cesare Prandelli selected Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Pirlo and Marchisio - with Giovinco and Giaccherini named amongst the substitutes.
It didn’t take long for Marchisio to stamp his authority on the game, laying on a pinpoint pass for Roma striker Destro to stroke home after just five minutes. Atalanta defender Peluso doubled the hosts’ advantage in second-half stoppage time following good work by Pirlo.
Giovinco made a brief cameo appearance from the bench, replacing goalscorer Destro on 82 minutes.
Elsewhere, Lichtsteiner’s Switzerland recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over Albania, with the Bianconeri full-back featuring for the full 90 minutes.
After finding the target in Friday night’s 2-2 draw against Poland, Vucinic watched his Montenegro team-mates sink San Marino with a 6-0 drubbing.
Over in South America, Vidal played the whole game as Chile slipped to a 3-1 home defeat against Columbia. There was more positive news, however, for Isla, who made his first start in a competitive fixture following seven months on the sidelines. The versatile full-back played 67 minutes before being substituted.
Asamoah once again took his place in the Ghana starting line-up, but was unable to prevent the Black Stars from dipping 2-0 in a friendly against Liberia.
French midfielder Pogba was on the scoresheet as the Under-20s sailed to the top of their Four Nations group by beating North Korea 3-1.
