Injury crisis strikes Juve Sunday 7 August, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just one week away from the Italian Supercup clash with Inter, the Bianconeri could be without Alessandro Birindelli, Giorgio Chiellini and Jonathan Zebina.

Former Fiorentina full-back Chiellini (pictured) lasted only five minutes of last night’s 2-0 friendly win at Benfica, as he was stretchered off with a suspected fractured nose following a collision with Alex.

His replacement was Birindelli and he was also carried away from the pitch after spraining his right knee. More tests are needed to know how long he’ll be out for, but there are reports the ligaments have been damaged.

Zebina did not even fly out to Portugal for this prestigious test due to an injury, while Gianluca Zambrotta was left on the sidelines with a cut to his foot.

Muscular problems have also hit Robert Kovac, while Igor Tudor is thought to be on the verge of a move to Supercup opponents Inter in exchange for Cristiano Zanetti.

This leaves Coach Fabio Capello with precious few alternatives in defence, though Zambrotta is set to recover in time for next Sunday’s showdown at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The situation could further push Juve to move for Miguel, the young defender who is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Benfica. The player insists his contract has expired, but the club maintains there is another year left to run and FIFA are arbitrating on the matter.

“We played a great first half, even if we clearly don’t have full match fitness yet,” said Capello after the 2-0 victory in Lisbon.

“I saw a lot of effort and quality, while tactically are movements are coming together and even Emerson is starting to find his form. It was a tough test and we’ll be ready for the Italian Supercup.”

The Italian Supercup is Serie A’s version of the Charity Shield between Scudetto winners Juventus and Coppa Italia holders Inter.

Nicole's right. The only starter injured is Zebina, and he's by far our worst. And it's not called Charity Shield anymore -- it's Community Shield now ;)

Birindelli injury blow
Monday 8 August, 2005
Juventus have been rocked by the news that Alessandro Birindelli is out for the next six months.

The 30-year-old, who has spent the past few seasons as a back-up player, suffered a knee injury against Benfica on Saturday.

Tests have shown that he has damaged ligaments in his right knee and he will be forced to wear a cast for a fortnight before it can be operated on.

Juventus Coach Fabio Capello (pictured) already has enough injury concerns ahead of the new season, but he would not be drawn into revealing any potential replacements.

“We will have to evaluate the situation before taking any decision,” said the tactician.

The situation could lead to the Bianconeri speeding up their move for Miguel.

The Portuguese defender is currently at the centre of a transfer row with Benfica.

He insists his contract has expired, but the club maintains there is another year left to run and FIFA are arbitrating on the matter.

It has also been reported that David Trezeguet pulled out of training today with an ankle complaint.

Capello will be hoping that it is not serious after the French international missed much of last season through injury.

Nicole is right. But given how many minutes our starting defense put in on the pitch last season, we're going to need reserves. There's no way I think we can expect Canna, Thuram, and Zambro to all put in the combined minutes as they had last season.

Otherwise, I think Capello may have to start experimenting with the 3-4-3 later on in the season. With Viera and Emerson at center, this might not be so terrible for our usual style of play.

Most likely, he is going to play Thuram as right back, and have someone like Kovac or Tudor in the centre, if Chellini hadnt of been injured, could of put Zambro at right back, but aint going to happen.

Biri is out 6 months...

The defense is thinning due to injuries, plus we may be trading Tudor for C. Zanetti

Why do I have a feeling that Moggi and company WILL NOT sign anymore defenders ???

Actually, with Birindelli injured we still don't need any fullback signings. We have the same nummer of fullbacks as we had last season, 4 fullbacks:

Zambrotta, Chiellini, Zebina, Pessotto.

A nosebreak should hardly be that serious of an injury, Chiellini should be back in action soon enough.

I recall Damien Francis at Norwich had a freak cheekbone fracture in practice last season. He was out for just a few weeks though, and had experimented with some face-protection devices to allow him to play sooner.

I would love to see Chiellini get to prove his stuff soon in Juve stripes...

Well even though Birindelli is out for 6 months, I still think that this news has been blown out of proportion by the media again. If u really look at it, it isn't as serious as it is reported. Juz take a look, 2 backup players and a 1st team player r injured, most likely Capello would put Pessoto at the right back position, so everything is still doing ok.
