I'm a Christian.

I don't follow traditions for the sake of tradition, or do anything out of obligation or fear of punishment if I don't do the right thing, but simply as a natural reaction of gratitude. I don't even like to use the word "religion", because it sounds so rigid and forced; I just think of it as my friendship and relationship with my Creator and Saviour.

I devote my life to Christ because I believe he took the bullet for me, and I'm secure in knowing that I've got nothing to fear once I die. Not because I've lived a better life than anyone else, or because I'm a better person, or because I've gone to church more or said more prayers, but because I simply accepted the free gift of Salvation offered to me.
the best post, so far...

I'm a Christian too.

I think religion in any case is a joke.

It is civilizations search for why we exist, and when they or any can not come up with an explanation (ages ago) we do the only thing we can, look to the heavens.

Believing in god today is like still sailing near the coast.

I agree that religion is a joke, however I have no desire to sail anywhere off the coast, as I am shite and sailing and don't want to be stranded in the middle of the ocean.

I have questioned myself from time to time whether I really believe there is a God or whether I am still as primitive in my thinking as those who created Gods and worshiped them. For myself though I have come to the conclusion that it's better to believe and not end up with anything than to not believe and face any consequence that comes with non-belief.

If you're raised without any "religious" beliefs, all divine theories seem entirely illogical, at least in my view. I'm able to respect everyone else's views, but personally they're just a load of made up stories meant to control people in my eyes.

BTW - The line regarding sailing wasn't meant to be metaphorical or symbolic at all, I was simply saying I am shite at sailing :lol2:

I was raised in a very religious Hindu home but for myself I shrugged off the idea of religion a couple of years ago. But I am like you in that I respect everyones personal views as well.

Having been raised without any religious beliefs, every religion just seems like a joke. If you just look at it as a whole, and think "well if there are 2000 versions of 2000 different religions, none of them can really be entirely realistic" it's kind of hard to take any of them seriously. Religion is a positive thing when used for the right reasons(charity), but it's just the opposite when imposed on others and taken too far (all the wars going on, or law-making based on christianity :lazy: )

As far as I see most religions are supposed to lead down a righteous path, but sometimes they breed hypocrites and people who just use it for all the wrong reasons. I don't really think of religion in terms of a joke because of the fact that some people can misuse anything so that's where we may differ a bit. Do you believe in God though? So far you've said about religion alone...unless you said something earlier in the thread that I missed. I am kinda sensing no though.

You're good, and I agree with you in certain part.
