really, this is a very important topic.

The word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils, says a group of teachers.

Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.

A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children.
"We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.

"But I recognize that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.

The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.

The term "Professional Association of Teachers" should be banned as well, in favor of Overpaid Idiots..
I was thinking just the same thing... except my thought was more along the lines of the "Professional Association of Deferred Educators OF the Future" (PADE OFF).

this is dumb, some kids need a kick up the ass, telling them they failed is something even for that to happen...

Its dumb and that idea deserves an F.

Why lie to the children. Hey, you failed, do better next time.

So instead of saying they failed teachers now tell students that their "success has been deferred" ? :howler:

In many instances, failing comes before success. It's not neccesarily bad to experience some failure at some point.

Why exactly... These people are not overpaid... they are average teachers who in reality are underpaid... PAT is jus a trade union built up of normal teachers from around the country...

They have done alot of good for our education system and are jus about the only trade union in the country who have a policy that does not allow its members to go on strike... They sort their issues in other ways without disrupting the education of the countries children... A very good organisation...

Though admittedly this idea is complete lunacy

I agree paul, both my parents are member of PAT and i see them as a sound trade union.

Imo the word fail is exactly what some people needs for a kick up the arse.

There is no real academic reason for failure other than lack of hard work..thus "fail" and its brutal aura are a usefull weapon for both teachers and students to help motivate them....the idea to remove the word is stupid.

Another example of the nation being wrapped up in cotton wool.

I don't know. I think that they've got the right idea, just poor execution. They need to do away with the whole pass or fail idea completely. Why not evaluate students based on what they've learned, rather than what they should have learned?
