I think he was very good. Although he missed his opporunities he was in the right place at the right time. If he hadn't tried to over do it he would have scored. Although I udnerstand that he wants the last goal to be something extra. I think he should have been subbed in at half time atleast. Best would have been if he started.

Del Piero happy with 2005 Thursday 22 December, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus’ Alessandro Del Piero insisted that he will not dwell on his wasted chances during the 2-0 win over Siena. "We’ve had a great year," he said.

Del Piero came on as a second half substitute last night and squandered two gilt-edged chances to become Juventus’ all-time top goalscorer.

With the match already beyond the visitors’ reach, Coach Fabio Capello replaced David Trezeguet with Pinturicchio on the hour in order to give him the chance to make history with his 183rd goal in the Bianconeri shirt.

However, on two occasions when free in the area, the Italy international tried to take the ball around Antonio Mirante to finish with a flourish and was denied both times by the Siena goalkeeper.

"It doesn’t matter that I was unable to give myself a personal Christmas present," he insisted. "On a couple of occasions I came very close but I’m in no hurry.

"There’s plenty of time yet," he added. "Maybe I’ll do it on Saturday January 7 against Palermo."

Del Piero’s refusal to be downhearted about his failure to ice his Christmas cake is understandable given that Juventus have really had an extraordinary 2005.

They have been top of the League literally all year, having collected 93 points from a possible 117 in 39 League matches.

In that time they have also won a 28th Scudetto and got this season off to a flyer too, losing just once, finishing top of their Champions League group and earning a favourable draw against Werder Bremen in the next round.

"It’s been a big year," agreed Del Piero. "With two goals in each half against Siena we’ve ended 2005 in style.

"That was our ninth consecutive home win, we were crowned winter champions with two matches still to play," continued Juve’s No 10. "So there’s plenty to reflect upon with satisfaction. Now we can rest and enjoy a peaceful break."

To me the goalscoring record is irrelevant. As long as Alex gives his all when he gets a chance to play and helps the team, whether it be with goals, assists, good build-up play or hardwork, I'll be happy.

Del Piero will get his 183rd Juve goal sooner or later, it's only a matter of time.

That's something i'm worried about..........if capello doesnt play him often, will lippi select him for the world cup? cassano is back now, totti, toni, gilardino are all definates, so alex will be fighting with iaquinta, vieri, inzaghi for the last spot"s"

this could be really a problem. but I think Lippi is wise enough.

i think both alex and cassano will make the squad in italy.
cassano because he has been in great goal scoring form with roma off late, and anyway, leaving him out would be a huge mistake.
del piero because if there's any coach who knows how to get the best out of him,its lippi.

i think the forward line for the world cup would consist of gilarino, del piero, toni, cassano and iaquinta..with totti as the prime playmaker.
