Del Piero enjoys Juve record Wednesday 7 December, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fabio Capello and Alessandro Del Piero discuss the new record and claim topping the Group could be crucial for their European campaign.

“It was a good first half and we relaxed a little after the break, but Rapid didn’t create too many problems for us,” said the Coach after the 3-1 win in Vienna. That result, and Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Club Brugge, saw the Bianconeri through on top of Group A.

“It was important to top the Group so that we could avoid some dangerous sides in the draw, although Real Madrid and Chelsea are the worst picks on paper. We don’t know what form we or our opponents will be in come February.”

Del Piero matched Giampiero Boniperti’s record of 182 goals in a Juventus jersey with his brace in Vienna, including a fantastic free kick.

“I am happy for him, as I knew it was a record he cared about and he achieved that tonight. I have a remarkably professional group of players who, even when a few names in the line-up change, know exactly what to do when they go out there. The most important thing for me is the effort they put in, as that always proves decisive when getting results.”

Three Serie A sides are through to the next round and seeded in next Friday’s draw, but Udinese were eliminated by Barcelona and Werder Bremen.

“It really disappoints me that Udinese conceded that goal from Barcelona and it’s a great shame they couldn’t join the other Italians in the next round. I was very shocked by Manchester United’s exit, even from the UEFA Cup,” noted Capello.

Del Piero was Man of the Match with his historic brace and looked at his role within the Bianconeri squad at this stage of his career.

“I am extremely happy to have scored so much and to have become a part of Juve’s history,” said the captain after hitting his 182nd official strike. “Goals aren’t the only way you can gauge the value of a striker, as just playing for this wonderful club is what counts. In my first few years I hardly scored at all at Juve, so I have become more accurate with age and experience.”

The free kick from 30 metres was particularly impressive and even surprised Del Piero himself.

“I have gone close with a couple of free kicks recently, hitting the crossbar twice, but I do tend to prefer the set-pieces a little nearer to the goal than that. It was an unusual strike for me. I hope all these goals can be seen as simply stepping stones on a long journey. I don’t like to set myself specific targets and prefer instead to concentrate on getting the best out of myself.”

Looking back over his 182 goals for the club, Del Piero picks two in particular that stand out in his memory.

“There are two special goals in my heart. The first is the Intercontinental Cup Final and the other was against Fiorentina when we won 3-2 and really pushed us towards the Scudetto. It gave the team a lot of belief, as we fought back from 2-0 down.”

To celebrate the record, I have an interview made to Boniperti:

-------------------------------

Colpo riuscito, in 24 ore.

- Piacevole?

Avrei giocato fino a 36 anni anch’io.

Ok, Let's do like this. Since I don't have much time, I'm going to summarize/translate pieces of the article from time to time.
......

And the day of the 182th came. The day of the goal that changes a "chart" that had been left unchanged since '61. Boniperti now shares the record with Del Piero, author of 2 goals against Rapid in CL, on the very same field were the presidentissimo made his debut with the NT. And it wasn't a happy debut (9th november '47: Austria-Italy 5-1).. But this is another story. Today's story is of Alessandro, a young boy brought to Turin by Boniperti himself. It was the summer of '93

TBC
..........

Now I'm going back to the book for my exam. As soon as I get tired of it, I'm going to translate another part of the article.

- Do you remember, president?

'Of course. Pietro Aggradi, Padova's sport director, that had been one of my teammate at Juve in the second half of the fifties, had talked me highly about him. I went to see some matches, also because I was interested in Di Livio too. Then I made other scouts follow him, Causio included. Del Piero was for sure Juve material. But I had to hurry, because Marino Puggina, Padova's president with a rossonero heart, would have been glad to sell him to Milan. Blitz succeeded, in 24 hours. Then we met in my office in Crimea square. The boy came to sign the contract accompained by Gastone Rizzato, his manager, then I took Alessandro to see the trophies. "Have you seen how many they are? Well, try to win some yourself too. To make Juve even greater. And don't worry about the contract. We'll write the amount of the wage ourselves, don't worry".'

- A very fair meeting.

Boniperti laughs, but doesn't have regrets. "He was a young boy, it was ok like that".

TBC....

And now back on my boring book. :frown:

- 12 years later that young boy has dethroned you. How much does it sadden you from 1 to 10?

"What are you talking about? I love/care about Del Piero and it was me that brought him to Juve, but you can't compare the 2 situations. I have scored 182 goals, 178 of them in Serie A, because in the years when I played as a forward the cups had still to be born. Now in one season a player plays two championships: Serie A and the cups. Not only: when I played the deflections were counted as own goals, now they don't exist anymore, because the goal is alway of who has shot.. And my career as a forward ended in '57, with the arrival of Charles and Sivori: I became a wing, I made them score the goals. But I had already had my satisfactions. The day of my "try out" (If you have a better word to say it let me know) I scored 7 goals and my first 100 were scored in 161 matches. When I was 20 I was the top scorer in Serie A before Mazzola, I had scored 27, he 25. I'm talking about Valentino Mazzola, the greatest. What could I have asked more, considering that my dream when I was a child was to dress, at least once, the Juve shirt? I received a lot from football, I had fun, how could I complain? And this record has remained still since '61, after more than 40 years it's time for a change. If it's Del Piero, even better. Want to know the truth? This thing gave me a popularity within the young people that I hadn't before. They knew me as the president of Juventus, but not as a player, as a scorer. Now, at 77, I'm once again on the front line, incredible".
