Del Piero enjoys Juve record Wednesday 7 December, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fabio Capello and Alessandro Del Piero discuss the new record and claim topping the Group could be crucial for their European campaign.

“It was a good first half and we relaxed a little after the break, but Rapid didn’t create too many problems for us,” said the Coach after the 3-1 win in Vienna. That result, and Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Club Brugge, saw the Bianconeri through on top of Group A.

“It was important to top the Group so that we could avoid some dangerous sides in the draw, although Real Madrid and Chelsea are the worst picks on paper. We don’t know what form we or our opponents will be in come February.”

Del Piero matched Giampiero Boniperti’s record of 182 goals in a Juventus jersey with his brace in Vienna, including a fantastic free kick.

“I am happy for him, as I knew it was a record he cared about and he achieved that tonight. I have a remarkably professional group of players who, even when a few names in the line-up change, know exactly what to do when they go out there. The most important thing for me is the effort they put in, as that always proves decisive when getting results.”

Three Serie A sides are through to the next round and seeded in next Friday’s draw, but Udinese were eliminated by Barcelona and Werder Bremen.

“It really disappoints me that Udinese conceded that goal from Barcelona and it’s a great shame they couldn’t join the other Italians in the next round. I was very shocked by Manchester United’s exit, even from the UEFA Cup,” noted Capello.

Del Piero was Man of the Match with his historic brace and looked at his role within the Bianconeri squad at this stage of his career.

“I am extremely happy to have scored so much and to have become a part of Juve’s history,” said the captain after hitting his 182nd official strike. “Goals aren’t the only way you can gauge the value of a striker, as just playing for this wonderful club is what counts. In my first few years I hardly scored at all at Juve, so I have become more accurate with age and experience.”

The free kick from 30 metres was particularly impressive and even surprised Del Piero himself.

“I have gone close with a couple of free kicks recently, hitting the crossbar twice, but I do tend to prefer the set-pieces a little nearer to the goal than that. It was an unusual strike for me. I hope all these goals can be seen as simply stepping stones on a long journey. I don’t like to set myself specific targets and prefer instead to concentrate on getting the best out of myself.”

Looking back over his 182 goals for the club, Del Piero picks two in particular that stand out in his memory.

“There are two special goals in my heart. The first is the Intercontinental Cup Final and the other was against Fiorentina when we won 3-2 and really pushed us towards the Scudetto. It gave the team a lot of belief, as we fought back from 2-0 down.”

When real class is present, maturity brings to a player the capacity to extract the full potential to his skills and make them more productive to the team. And i think its mainly a matter of mental attitude.
In many senses, Del Piero is more valuable for the team now that was 7 or 8 years ago. As long as he mantains his good pyhisical form and animic momentum, he can be a mayor force in our purse of CL and scudetto.

Like the good wines, DP are getting better with time......

GODOT, KEEP IT COMING.....
