Juventus openly want Cassano Monday 16 February, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has sensationally revealed Antonio Cassano is a transfer target, following weeks of speculation.

The Bianconeri have long been admirers of the 26-year-old Sampdoria fantasista and are lining him up as a successor to Alessandro Del Piero, who is expected to retire in 2010. :dazed: WTFF !!

“He is a boy that is fast becoming a man,” Cobolli Gigli told Radio Anch'io lo Sport. “He is a very good player.

“Our director of sport Alessio Secco has spoken about possible acquisitions for next season and Cassano is one of the names we are thinking about.”

Cassano was in Turin yesterday as Sampdoria played Juventus and performed brilliantly as the Blucerchiati earned a 1-1 draw.

That point leaves Juventus even further off the pace in Serie A, as rivals Inter beat Milan last night to move nine points clear at the top of the table.

However, Cobolli Gigli does not believe the title race is over. He considers Inter odds on favourites to win the Scudetto, though.

“I think Inter made a great step forward,” Cobolli Gigli explained. “Nothing is finished, only the numbers can end the argument.

“Inter are showing themselves to be a battle cruiser. But like Jose Mourinho said, they still need another 33 points to be sure of the title.

“I don't envy them, but Maicon is a great player. Other teams like Juve have to win their remaining games if they are to stay in the race,” Cobolli Gigli said before declaring Coach Claudio Ranieri safe.

“I am very satisfied with Ranieri. Remember, we are second in the table. It seems to me that he has brought the squad on from last year and they are improving.

“He still has a contract with us and it will be respected,” Cobolli Gigli affirmed. “Yesterday he gave a great show as a coach, bringing on Seba Giovinco and playing Tiago.”

Cobolli Gigli believes the next few weeks will be crucial in deciding the title, as the Champions League returns.

“Inter are a very structured team and can afford to tire themselves out in Europe. The moment of truth will be next week when the Champions League and UEFA Cup begins again.

“Anything can happen,” he admitted. “The championship is not lost. History shows us that there have been many great comebacks.”

Juventus and Del Piero is a long story that hopefully will never end.

I was talking with the closest Juve fan to me the other day and we both agreed that Del Piero in the future will achieve much more with the club than he already did.

Do you see him in an honoury posistion or hands on coaching.
There are few great players who have achieved much in coaching.

I can't see DP in that role.

i'm undecided as to whether or not ale would be a good coach, he would have the respect fo the players no doubt, i'm not sure how his tactics would be, i would prefer him as club president

He wont retire in 2010, he will have a lesser role in the team, meaning not starter in 2010, but not retire. He jokes about playing until 40, but its shows his determination and hunger for more, defenitely will be around till 2012 I think, if nothing drastic happens, meaning hopefully no nasty injury.

I really cant take to think about him retiring though, not to be overly dramatic, but Football be way less enjoyable for me without watching him weekly.

And who knows how competent he would be as a coach, he is an intelligent and a leader, but who really knows. What I know though for sure is that this classy mofo will be directly involved with Juve til his death bed. AT THE LEAST as an honorary President as Boniperti (who first was ze real Presidente).

It is so going to be sad and ugly to know that Del Piero wont be on the field when he retires. I can't help myself but it really saddens me a lot.

Really ugly part in football.
