Have you guys noticed something about our last 2 corner goals? (Chiellini vs Milan and Legro vs Atalanta)

Milan and Atalanta had gone for zonal marking, just getting a line of players along the 6 yard line and those players all moving out to attack the ball rather than attempting to man mark.
I wanted to mention this after the Milan match because it looked to me like Del Piero spotted that Milan had set up their defensive line very deep in anticipation of an in-swinging corner, and he then put the cross just far enough out to be beyond the reach of Milan's defense. But i thought that maybe it was just a coincidence.

Then i saw that he did exactly the same thing against Atalanta, who also set up their defensive line deep, and i realized that it wasn't a coincidence. We've prepared for this situation on trainings and now we scored twice in a row.
Yeah, I wondered if it was deliberate against Milan, but the goal against Atalanta suggests it was planned in advance. Good to see that the coaches and players are analysing opponents thoroughly.

As an aside: zonal marking is shit. Either ball will be too far out for the defence to reach or the ball will be on top of the defence which will allow an attacker a clear run at it. I can tell you from experience that there is nothing worse than trying to defend a high ball when you are jumping from a standing start and the attacker is taking a running jump.

We should have a friendly with Arsenal just to train more on our deadly set piece headers. They are the most likely to successfully score against, hence boost our players confidence for the vital second half of the season

Giovinco wins Alex backing

Saturday 27 December, 2008

Alex Del Piero has told Sebastian Giovinco that he’ll one day inherit the Juventus No 10 shirt – but he’ll have to be patient.

The Under-21 international is a rising star in the Italian game and has inevitably been likened to the Old Lady skipper.

And although Del Piero does believe that Giovinco has the X-factor, he’s going to have to wait for his chance.

“I won’t be here in five years,” noted the 34-year-old. “But Giovinco will be. The future is his, along with [teammates] Claudio Marchisio and Paolo De Ceglie.”

Del Piero, the 2008 top scorer in Serie A with 20 goals, is enjoying another excellent campaign and has his sights on the Scudetto and Champions League for 2009.

“Inter were superior to us in the game we lost at San Siro earlier this term,” continued the No 10. “But they also have an advantage over us.

“They may have changed their coaching staff, but they still have the same winning squad which triumphed under the leadership of Roberto Mancini.”

While Inter are their biggest rivals at home, Chelsea stand in the way of La Vecchia Signora’s European dreams.

“We’ll run a great risk taking them on,” added Ale. “However, I prefer to play a big club at this stage of the competition as it focuses the mind more.

“Had we been drawn against Sporting Lisbon then a few people around us may not have concentrated fully and gone into the game with the wrong mindset.”

Del Piero also admitted that he still wishes to be a part of Marcello Lippi’s Azzurri plans despite his omission in recent times. “I hope that door is still open,” he noted.
