Striker Alessandro Del Piero hopes victory against France "is only the starting point" for Italy after they made it to the last eight despite early setbacks.

'Starting point'
A 2-0 victory in their final Group C game, coupled with Romania's 2-0 loss to section winners the Netherlands, gave the world champions second place and a quarter-final against Spain in Vienna on Sunday. Del Piero did not feature against France, but told euro2008.com: "I hope this match is only a starting point for us. It was a win that allowed us to go through and keep believing in our chances of going all the way. We have to use this momentum in the next game."

Spain impress
The 33-year-old knows Italy will need all the momentum they can muster if they are to master a Spain side who have impressed in their Group D matches in Austria – beating Russia 4-1 and Sweden 2-1. "It's an all-or-nothing game against a very strong side," said the Juventus forward. "Like us, they are a contender to go and win the tournament. Anything can happen in this kind of game."

Recovery point
Having started the 1-1 draw with Romania which followed Italy's opening 3-0 defeat by the Netherlands, Del Piero lost his place to Antonio Cassano for the France fixture. Despite his subsequent reduced status, he feels the point gained against the Romanians was an important one. "I think our recovery began against Romania," he said. "We took the right approach against both Romania and France. We played well and fortunately everything went our way in our decisive game."

First-half gold
Mauro Camoranesi, Del Piero's Juventus team-mate, was a second-half substitute against France but insists that Italy were even better before he took the field. "We took an important step forward in the championship," the Argentina-born winger told euro2008.com. "My team-mates played a wonderful first half, creating six or seven clear chances. We probably should have killed the game in the first half but we must be happy with our performance." He added: "Now we have another difficult match against another great side [Spain] and we have to play as we did against France if we want to reach the semi-finals."

For the god knows how many times, I'll ask again, what is soo risky in playing both Del Piero and Cassano?

becuz essentially it is similar to england tryin to play gerrard and lampard in the centre midfield. don't put round pegs into a square hole!

There is no denying the class and skill of both players indiviually, but for me they are to similar in style of play. Both are natural supplimentary strikers who like to drop deep into the midfield & link the play with a forward running striker (ala trez/DP at juve or cassano/montella or bonazzoli at samp). playing them both IMO would crowd our midfield and give them no release passes from the midfield to a genuine frontman thus making the game very narrow and conjested (again i reiterate my point of the importance of inzaghi or an inzaghi-like player in the NT).

While teh movement of two foxy players such as the ones in question wud no doubt test any defence with their movement & skill, playing both cassano & DP would require great discipline & understanding between the 2 that they both cannot go searching for the ball at the same points during the game. If dunadoni can somehow conjure the relevant testicular fortitude & girth to drop that pot-snake toni (the guy cudn't hit water if he fell off a boat!) and play them both it would have to be under the terms that one stays well forward. & i honestly if dunadoni cud take his tongue off toni dick for long enuff to pull that off.;)

There was no reason to put Del Piero on.

When winning you either put on more defensive players, or faster players so you can counter attack.

Del Piero didn't fit either category, so it was better to save him for the game(s) to come.

So hell come on only when Italy are losing?

Agree. He needed to try Aquilani, because I would think he is going to start him on Sunday.

It isnt over yet. Remember the game against Germany in the WC? He was the decisive player (not just the goal he scored, but influence overall). Lippi himself said it.
