Del Piero: I Can Be Useful At Euro 2008

Alessandro Del Piero insists that his ability to interpret different forward roles can be helpful for Italy at Euro 2008.

The Golden Boy has not played for the Azzurri since September of last year, and his participation at this summer’s Euros was, until recently, believed to be in huge doubt.

However the Juventus skipper has been in stunning form over the past few months or so, and it is now widely believed that he will be travelling to Austria and Switzerland.
Yesterday afternoon Del Piero scored again in the 1-1 draw with Catania, a goal that now makes him joint top-scorer in the Serie A scorers charts, alongside team-mate David Trezeguet and Genoa's Marco Borriello.

It’s not easy to score and you don’t go out just looking to find the net,” explained the 33-year-old, who is having his most prolific season since 1997/98.

You look to do the right things at the right time and I think that is the biggest factor for me. But it is a great pleasure to score.

Will I go to Euro 2008? I won’t be a first striker, but I can play in other roles, as I have shown in the past.

Del Piero then focused on Juventus, and he has called for summer reinforcements so that the team can make the extra step up next season.

The club’s project has to take the history of the team into consideration and it is a strong tradition,” he stated.

Juve have to be strong and aim for the top. The best way to do that is to reinforce the squad this summer. We also need to do that because our rivals will be stronger still next year.”

you should be a starting striker, you are phenomenal!
I hope we see Del Piero - Toni as starting fowards for Italia. IMO the only person who could mount a real challenge from Del Piero is Cassano, & he most probably will do something stupid in the mean time.. I like Quagliarella & Di Natale but they're not on terms with Ale, it's as simple as that

Juve duo to Don: Pick Alex Monday 12 May, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Roberto Donadoni prepares to pick his squad for Euro 2008, the Juventus camp are crossing their fingers for Alessandro Del Piero.

Del Piero moved joint top of Serie A’s scoring chart with his 19th goal of the campaign against Catania yesterday, but is by no means guaranteed to travel to Austria and Switzerland.

Despite his omission from recent Italy squads, former Juve defender and team manager Pessotto believes Alex should be at Euro 2008.

“Alessandro has had an excellent campaign,” he said on Rai Radio Anch’io Sport.

“Even if it is tough from a tactical point of view to fit him in the national side, he has the charisma, determination and ability to handle the pressure.

“He is a player who offers so many options to a Coach and I hope that he won’t be coming on tour with us to Asia because he is with the Azzurri.”

And tactician Claudio Ranieri is also fighting Pinturricchio’s corner, as he feels that he is indispensable.

“I think that Del Piero has convinced Donadoni,” the Old Lady Coach told the Guerin Sportivo.

“Alessandro hadn’t done well against France, but who would have under those circumstances?

“At the start of the season, even I didn’t use him that much and he complained like the others on the bench.

“But the difference is that he never gave up, unlike lots of others, Champions don’t give in.

“Del Piero has enormous character and is a professional like few others in the world.”

did u see the play between Ale and Trez against Catania...Trez flicked the ball over himself to Ale, who had a low shot go just wide of the right-hand post....that move was absolute poetry! :juventus:
