Lippi: “Del Piero, symbol of Italian football”

“Del Piero is one of the few icons left in Italian football”. Speaking about the Bianconeri captain was Marcello Lippi, in town for the launch of the Salvatore Lo Presti football annual. “Alex is a fine example of professionalism – continued the World Cup winning coach – as he showed this summer, when, right in the thick of the 'Calciopoli’ scandal, he pledged his allegiance to Juventus without hesitation. He’s a symbol of not only this club, but also of Italian football as a whole”. And on what is to be the captain’s 500th appearance for the club this Saturday. “I don’t know whether that’s a record, but I know the 200 plus goals he’s scored for Juventus certainly are. More than anything else, these records bear witness to just how much he’s done for his team and just how great a champion Alex is, both from a footballing and a human perspective”.

Alex takes another step into the history books

Just four days after the clash with Cesena, Juventus return to the Olimpico for their final home game of this first half of the season. Saturday promises to be one to remember as Alessandro Del Piero makes his 500th appearance for the Bianconeri, a prestigious milestone for an immense champion.

Saturday’s visitors to the Olimpico are Rolando Maran’s Bari, fresh from consecutive draws with Albinoleffe, Genoa and Rimini and desperate for a favourable result as they look to keep themselves in the hunt for promotion. The Biancorossi currently lie down in eighth place - four points behind Genoa, the lowest placed team in the breakaway group at the top - and haven’t scored away from home since their victorious derby with Lecce in mid-December. They’re by no means out of the race but they can’t afford too many more slip-ups, which is why Moran will be sending his men out on Saturday with more concentration and more hunger than ever. Their strength lies in a solid defence; only Juventus and Napoli have done better over the first half of the championship, conceding ten and eleven goals respectively, to Bari’s twelve. Their miserly backline has proved decisive both home and away, so much so that they have only lost by more than one goal on one occasion on their travels, against Crotone on opening day. To get the better of Moran’s outfit, Juventus will therefore need to get at them right from the off, piling on the pressure and making the most of the few opportunities the men from Puglia are likely to concede. However, an attacking line which includes Del Piero and Trezeguet – both on the score sheet against Cesena – can get the better of any defence.

Cesena slam ‘arrogant’ Del Boy

Cesena President Giorgio Lugaresi has criticised Juventus skipper Alex Del Piero’s attitude during Tuesday’s Serie B clash.

The Old Lady won the tie 2-1, which was originally scheduled for December but was postponed after the tragic accident involving two Bianconeri youth team players.

However, the match ended in a tense atmosphere after the visitors were disallowed a goal just seconds before the final whistle.

“I am tired – now I feel that I must speak up. What happened in Turin was incredible,” said Lugaresi. “I feel that my club deserves to be respected, I cannot remain silent any longer.

“What I saw on Tuesday was utter nonsense. After Jonathan Zebina was sent-off it seemed that Del Piero took the referee’s place – he was the one who gave orders on the pitch.

“Why was he allowed to reprimand the assistant referees? If one of my men had behaved that way I am sure they would have asked the policemen to send him away.”

Lugaresi was disappointed with the world champion’s behaviour, which he did not consider sportsmanlike.

“I don’t like this Del Piero, he was arrogant and this does not correspond to the image we all have of him. If he is nervous because he is playing in Serie B that is not our fault.

“If you want to win, you must do so because you deserve it on the pitch, not because you raise your voice and scream,” concluded the official.

Juventus return to action this weekend with another home clash against Bari, while Cesena travel to Verona.

That Lugaresi just wants to be a famous guy, even for afew days, and that won't happen unless he criticizes somebody like Del Piero...
Del Piero decided to take refereeing in his hands when the real referees don´t do their job well. :D

He brought us a victory, though.
