Gattuso: Give Del Piero Armband
Gennaro Gattuso has weighed in on the debate as to who should replace Fabio Cannavaro as captain of the Italian national team.
Cannavaro’s heartbreaking training ground injury, which has ruled him out of Euro 2008, not only left a massive gap at the heart of the defence, but it has also deprived the Azzurri of their captain and leader.
The two favourites to be named as the new captain are Buffon and Del Piero, who are the two highest appearance makers in the squad, the former winning 82 caps, and the latter 86.
"I think at this moment Del Piero is captain because of appearances," was Gattuso's rationale.
"If he doesn't play, the captain is Buffon. We know that for us Buffon is very important."
While Del Piero has 86 caps to his name, his Juventus team-mate Buffon is a close second with 82 appearances for the Squadra Azzurra.
Gattuso, a born leader himself, went on to insist that Italy are not defense-oriented, citing Donadoni's 4-3-3 formation as evidence that the national team's notorious safety-first approach is a thing of the past.
"With three forwards it shows we are an attacking team," he concluded.

I think every azzuri fan still can see Cannavaro lifting the world cup two years ago when he was a Juventino ..
now imagine Gigi or Alex lifting the Euro cup .. you just know how awesome Juventus is ..
