Ok first of all guys I have to state something, I haven't read all the posts. Hopefully will do that once I finish writing my post..
First of all the difference between Jihad and ijtihad..
Ijtihad: is when a person uses his mind to explore something new, something that the holy Quran hasn't stated it clearly or we haven't understood it well.
Like for an example, a certain situation where we are not sure if this thing is prohibited or allowed, the serniors of islamic knowledge gather and try to reach to a rule by using their understanding of al Quran.
Ijtihad is not limited to the seniors (Shoyookh), not at all. because in some certain situations you cannot reach a shaikh and ask him, in this way you have to Guess on it, by using your own knowledge. Example, you are in a different country than your own. You have no clue were is the direction to makkah (when we pray we point to makkah). So you start to use you geographic knowledge to guide yourself towards it. Thats called Ijtihad.
Jihad: Its the will to spread the word of god to all the none muslims, whether its by speach, writing, technology, education, war ..etc.
Most use jihad as war of muslims against non muslims which is totally wrong. IF THE WAR IS NOT PURELY FOR THE SAKE OF SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD THEN ITS NOT JIHAD.
Moreover many things have to come in place for jihad to happen. Things like:
1- The leader whether he's a president, king or whatever he might be allows its and calls for it.
2- There must be a war, not just someone doing a surprise attack killing innocent people.
3- There must be goals.. Not someone killing himself between people and all it jihad..
4- The people you are fighitng must know that you are going to fight them.
5- All the muslims community must gather and agree about it.. you don't just say I am going to fight those people personally.
Starting a war is not an easy thing in Islam,, if you know what ISLAM means in arabic you will understand that its not about war. Islam in arabic means PEACE. It litrrelly means PEACE.
Look at the histoy of Islam, when they went to war they don't kill and children, women, or elderly. They don't even cut a tree. Its prohibited. They only FIGHT (not kill) the ones who are fighting them. Before they enter a war they ask for peace, once and twice..
Nowadays its very difficult to do such things. Life is not as simple as before. There are adverse reactions to everything, plus there are politics which THE LEADERS agreed on. So no leader will go tell you fight against a different religion to spread your religion...
This is why JIHAD is not about fighting and killing. Its about behavior.. Thats the true will of god.
If you read the Quraan well, you will see that GOD sent profit mohammed peace be upon him to RE-ADJUST peoples behaviour... Its not a religion where no other religions can live with.. Not at all.

NOTE: if you are trying to compare what I said above to the situation in Israel and palastine then it wont work.. Thats a different situation with lots of complexes.
