Is 3 at the back his preferred formation?

Does this basically confirm a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3? We seem completely unprepared as a squad to play this, especially in the CB department.

What is the the thought here?
I have the same question. So has he ever used a four man backline in his career? Not as a makeshift but as a main formation for a team.
According to transfermarkt his preferred formation is 3-4-2-1, which is the one that he used most often during his career.

Not sure if he ever switched away from it outside of a select few games throughout the years(such as the game vs Udinese a few weeks ago out of necessity), so basically 3 CB’s is almost guaranteed, but let’s see how he adapts and adjusts from there, can surely make some tweaks upfront towards finding what works best(which he has done in the past too), so at least in this regard he absolutely needs to be flexible according to the squad available to him, although the base remains fixed.

Cabal would be perfect as a LCB in a 3 man backline imo.
Savona also better suited to RCB than RB.

The bit I care about is a midfield 3. The structure around it can be whatever. Locatelli Thuram and whoever else we add (hopefully Koopmeiners is the man if he gets over his flu) should be the core.

We played 3421 against Udinese too, not on paper but it was at least to me clear that Costa was RCB, allowed to push forward. Along with Veiga and Kelly as CBs. Cambiaso on the left flank and Nico as RWB.

What I like with managers like Ancelotti is that they look at what kind of players they have and try to create a system where you get the most out of what you have. Then there are the likes of Tudor that has learned one system. In my view, it is then up to the sporting director to find players that will push that manager out of the comfort zone. For example, don't sign traditional fullbacks that will slot right into that system. Instead, force the manager to slot in players like Nico and Cambiaso that will make a different interpretation of that role and offer something more valuable. Tudor has so far done well in that respect and put more attacking players in these roles, which I am glad to see. But I hope we don't give him the opportunity to put someone like Savona as a RWB because he will offer nothing in attack, nothing in the build up but solidify defense when we sit back. Don't look for wingbacks or fullbacks. Look for other players, push Tudor to develop his interpretation.

Very sensible decision to stick with him.

But what's the expectations for Tudor? Top 4 and getting out of CL group stage?

I don't know if they'll back him properly, still feels like management sees him as a stop-gap until a better option is available..

Easy. Be competitive in Serie A and try to win it.

This doesn’t necessarily means winning it, but being in the conversation for most of the season. No talk of “top 4 minimum”, no talk of “Juve is a construction site, transition year, year zero etc” and also to go as far as possible in the Coppa Italia and give a good account of ourselves in the CL.

For the CWC, I couldn’t give two fucks what we do in it. It’s a bullshit post-season kick about that the vast majority of players don’t even want to play in, and these players are coming off mentally and physically gruelling seasons.

I’m very happy we are showing some stability in sticking with Igor. Back him, get 3-4 quality players and show him support and imo we can do better than a lot of people think.

I agree. We have to be competitive and show some sort of progress which gives us fans hope.

After the failed Pirlo, Sarri, Allegri and Motta projects I just hope Tudor can bring some sort of stability.

But it’s still difficult to believe in, we’ve been so terrible in recruitement for a long time. We’ll see what players Comolli gives Tudor to work with.

Hm, we were prepared for this.

Then we tried to prepare for 2-7-2.

Now we're preparing for 3-5-2 again.

Result wise my expectations are fighting for Scudetto till the end and advance to knockout stage in CL.
Plus not getting embarrassed in the Coppa Italia by losing to inferior opponents, as in for example reaching the semi finals should be the bare minimum.

I agree on the rest, need to at the very least still be in the Scudetto race by late April.

But truth be told we’ll probably need to wait and see how the transfer market pans out and with what squad we go into the new season to better assess what expectations we should have.

I'm particularly prone to optimism but the vibes I'm getting are positive from all of this. We're taking smaller risks, not being promised the moon but at the same time it feels more likely to yield positive results.

I like Tudor: he has experience (even with mixed results) and actually I didn't know that he also stayed after 2006 he was just injured all year so didn't play.

He gets who we should be and I feel he has a good part to play in getting us back there.

Seria A teams coaches for next season and their average points per game last season. Tudor doesnt look that bad tbh. Add to that that he already knows the team very well, im really hoping he does good.

I would also argue that he was forced to get conservative tactically once it was certain they couldn’t drop any more points. And it was also the middle of the season. I think once he gets a full summer we’ll see an even more aggressive side. He is not a conservative manager by nature, he wants that gegenpress. We saw a watered down version of it.

Also next year competition in Serie A will be tough as hell, tougher then last year for sure.

Napoli is already stronger player-wise and they kept Conte. Inter will be there with experienced squad, maybe just a bit shaken with that CL embarrassment. Milan has Allegri now, who will surely do better then the coaches they had last year. Roma with Gasperini will do at least as good as Ranieri did. Atalanta and Lazio remain dangerous.

Napoli remain clear favorites for Scudetto IMO. The rest will fight for those 3 remaining CL places.
