i just worked this out some time back.dunno if any of you noticed it,but check this out :

brazil won its 3rd wc in 1970.
italy won its 3rd wc in 1982.

brazil won its 4th wc 24 years after its 3rd wc victory,in 1994.
add 24 years to italy's 3rd wc victory..and you get 2006.
mere coincedence?probably..

but here is when it starts to get really interesting :

16 years after brazil's 3rd wc victory,in 1986 they got knocked out of the wc in the quarterfinals on penalties to France.
16 years after italy's 3rd wc victory,in 1998 they got knocked out of the wc in the quaterfinals on penalties to France.

20 years after brazil's 3rd wc victory,in 1990,brazil got knocked out in the 2nd round.
20 years after italy's 3rd wc victory,in 2002,italy got knocked out in the 2nd round.

24 years after brazil's 3rd wc victory,in1994,brazil won the wc for the 4th time.
24 years after italy's 3rd wc,in 2006,italy....maybe?

coincidence is one thing.
but this is more than coincidence!!
