Even El Matador was there
Lippi, when asked after the match who was the most important player, named three names: Fresi, Zenoni and Salas. They never really got a chance, but they were important in the background.

Well done Marcelo for remembering! (everybody else will mention Nedved, Ciro, Buffon & co. anyway) :touched:

" The Spirit of Success"

Juventus’ draw with Perugia has assured them a deserved 27th Italian title. Football Italia looks back at how the Scudetto was won

Juventus have had one hand firmly on the Scudetto for some time now. The point against Perugia may have mathematically assured them the Italian title but the first building block was laid last May, when they dramatically won their 26th championship on the final day of the season.

That success was a clear demonstration that Juventus had begun a new winning cycle, one which coincided with the return of Coach Marcello Lippi (pictured) after two successive second placed finishes under the guidance of nearly man Carlo Ancelotti.

But Lippi not only brought back League success to the Delle Alpi outfit, he also restored the infamous ‘Spirito Juve’ - a winning mental belief - which has once more played a crucial part in their latest triumph.

Consecutive League losses against Lazio and Brescia earlier this term saw Juventus slip down to fourth in the table, some way behind the early pace setters of Milan, Inter and Lazio. A dip which could have seen the club abdicate their crown in favour of concentrating primarily on their Champions’ League campaign.

Yet surrender is seemingly not in the Bianconeri DNA. "From my very first day here I instantly realised that giving up was not an option," revealed key man Pavel Nedved. "The more obstacles that are placed in front of us, the higher we jump over them. Nothing is impossible here."

Clear demonstration of this never say die attitude has been witnessed in Serie A on a number of occasions this term. Parma, Roma and Bologna all found themselves 2-0 up against the Turin giants but Juventus salvaged a point in each of those ties. Points that inevitably add up come the end of the season.

Contrast this attitude to those of the Milan clubs. The two Italian giants both started the campaign with realistic title ambitions but the duo threw in the towel too soon. The Rossoneri openly admitted Scudetto defeat in Week 24 after the 0-0 draw against Chievo.

While Hector Cuper held his hands up when he handed in his teamsheet for the Week 31 game at Atalanta. He rested a host of key men due to the Champions’ League semi against Milan, then brought on a defensive midfielder for a striker with the score at 1-1.

The strength of Juventus was perhaps understandably just too much of an obstacle for them to conquer. Having kept the backbone to the side that lifted the 2001/02 Scudetto, Juve added the silky skills of Mauro Camoranesi in the summer who had an exceptional season. That led to a controversial Italian cap for the Argentine and the transformation of Gianluca Zambrotta to an attacking left-back.

Other summer signings such as Davide Baiocco and Emiliano Moretti didn’t really make such an impact and both were sent out on loan in January. They were simply surplus to requirements in a side that again boasts one of the meanest defences and deadliest attacks in the Division.

Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has been immense and expertly guarded again, especially by old man Ciro Ferrara and an uncompromising Lilian Thuram who has more than made up for his mediocre first season in Turin. Midfielders Edgar Davids and Alessio Tacchinardi have also been crucial.

There should be little surprise that goals have again been easy to come by even if Juve have had their attacking problems this term. David Trezeguet, last year’s Serie A top scorer with 24, has missed half of the campaign with a knee problem.

Summer signing Marco Di Vaio - despite his stunner against Perugia - has struggled to rediscover his immaculate Parma form, while Marcelo Salas has had another disappointing campaign. Fortunately Alex Del Piero was in inspirational form before his recent injury problems and 15 Juve players in total have pitched in with goals this term.

Yet despite these problems and Juve’s heavy fixture schedule, boss Lippi has masterfully managed to get his side consistently getting results. Let’s not forget that the injury time win against Perugia in Week 15 was the start of an amazing run which saw the club collect 31 points out of a possible 33.

That period of results is made the more unbelievable as it coincided with the six week absence of Del Piero, which was dealt with by a change in tactics to an exciting 4-2-3-1 formation. A clear demonstration that a team and not individual star players – take note Inter and Milan – win championships.

"It was a difficult season, much harder than the Scudetto we won last year," said Nedved at the Delle Alpi just minutes after Juve were crowned champs. "But winning is the main reason why I decided to come here. Now we want the Champions’ League." Real Madrid have been warned.
