I always think that the preparation games have nothing to do with the tournament itself.
Before the miserable last WorldCup France won South Korea in one of the preparation games (and Trezeguet scored ). it didn't help them did it??
and South Korea got to the semi final, even if they got a lot of help from the refs.

I still would say Holland is a big contender to win the Euro. let Makaay play though!!!

Actually, Korea played better than France in that match, and they won via a stupid Le Bouef goal in the last minute

things sometimes go the opposite way than how it is first predicted.
Holland can still show a good performance in the next few games

Erik, to say that Holland's layers could crush us if they played at their very best is true, but it's misleading. Firstly, that team playing to its potential would crush almost any other bar perhaps Brazil, France and possibly Italy. But that's insignificant in the face of the fact that Ireland's game depends on not letting a team like Holland play to their potential. We harry, press and kick anyone and everyone on the ball - if you're going to outplay us, you'll do it on our terms. If the Dutch couldn't hack that, then they can shove their 'total' football up where the sun don't shine.

Secondly, we were missing more players than you. Roy Keane and Damo Duff would be missed in any squad you care to name. Duff in particular would have handed Reisiger his ass on a plate. His replacement was Andy Reid, a first division rising star, who's got half a dozen caps. Keane was replaced by Alan Quinn, another first division player, who was making his first ever start for the country. That guy in left back? He plays for one of the also-rans in Scotland. At right back. The right winger, Miller, was making one of his first appearances too. If Holland can't beat a handful of debutants and lower division players at a canter, they certainly can't be relied on when they're playing world class teams.

We play on ball possession, we pressurise. We've also been known to play with so much fantasy and speed that any tackle was too late - the ball was already gone again. I'm sure even Ireland (who's fighting spirit I admire deeply) would have severe trouble trying to tackle that.

If Holland can't beat a handful of debutants and lower division players at a canter, they certainly can't be relied on when they're playing world class teams.

Never claimed the opposite. And I'd like to state (again) that Ireland's victory was well deserved.

Latvia doesn't suck arse - they eliminated Turkey for goodness' sake! Germany are a real tournament outfit - they'll get their act together.

All in all, its all but likely Holland will go through from the group stages. In the current dismal form they won't even beat bloody Andorra.

first of all Erik, Latvia didn't do a good result in their last game either. 2-2 against Azerbaijan is not good for any team that participate in a big tournament like the Euro 2004.
if Holland is not able to beat Latvia, then we are wasting our time talking about Holland.

Germany is a slow and predictable team, and Holland's players are much better. that doen't assure anything, but I won't say you'r the underdogs.

now the Czechs are real good. I don't know if they will go through... but they are a good team for sure and will be tough for any team.

Mikhail, why are you saying you missed Roy Keane? he didn't play for a very long time in Ireland NT and in the world cup you've done well without him.

Most of what roy keane did is hyped up by the media. Everyone deserves a second chance after all, we are all human.

Latvia is rubbish because most of their players come from weak teams in weak leagues. Give me one player who has broken into the starting 11 at a proper league competing, or even uefa cup place gaining squad. Latvia had no pressure on them, that was the difference, turkey's coach is a victim of his own sucess..and all the pressure was on turkey.

It could happen. Actually, I think Cruijff claimed that that was the mark of a truely great team - playing football despite being given no space to work with. I've rarely seen it done.

I think the Dutch suffer from the weight of expectation all of the time. The first thing Dave O'Leary did when he took over Leeds was to chuck the photos of the great teams of the 70s into the bin - he claimed that the weight of the club's history was an unnecessary and unwelcome weight on his players' shoulders. If the Dutch could only do the same, they might get their act together.

Exactly. Italy will likely get ingored or even booed at the airport if they dare to only get to the semis. France are expected to win every game. Portugal have the little matter that their golden generation is on the verge of retirement without ever winning anything with Portugal hanging like a weight around their necks - Rui Costa was booed off the pitch against Greece. It's similar with all big team - but some are better at handling it than others.
