My friend Marco, who runs Mondo Caffe up the street from where I work, is a Milan native and a die-hard milanista :groan:. For all his customers who come in to order, he addresses all the men as "my friend" (though not "mio amico") and all the women as "hey, beautiful".
Oh, yeah. He's a customer charmer, most definitely. But he pulls it off successfully because it comes off as genuine and not as just some gimmick.
