Porto make Diego move
Saturday, 26 June 2004

by Patricio Figueroa
UEFA Champions League victors Porto are stepping up their pursuit of Brazilian starlet Diego, after commencing negotiations with his club Santos.
Diego is one of the rising stars of Brazilian football and has already witnessed one opportunity of a move to Europe fall through.

Tottenham Hotspur were extremely keen to bring the youngster to The Premiership but their bid was rebuffed by Santos last season.

Porto have now emerged as front-runners to snare Diego as they seek a replacement for Deco, who is likely to leave the club before the start of the new season.

Diego's agent, and father, Djair Ribas has confirmed Porto have started talks to sign the attacker although he is not counting his chickens after the saga with Spurs.

"The official of Porto, Antonio Araujo, had a meeting with the president of Santos, Marcelo Texeira, in his house," commented Ribas.

"What a few months ago were only rumours now are a little bit more serious because they have travelled to Brazil to have discussions and they even went to see the Santos president at his house.

"I can't confirm anything because they have only had talks with Santos for the moment. Next week they have told me that they want to have a meeting with me and the player.

"It's very difficult to say something at this moment and I don't want to happen again, what happened before with Tottenham."
