A new league to rival the Champions League returns to the agenda on Monday, when some of Europe's top clubs meet in Spain.
The Golden Cup is the idea of a group of Spanish businessmen who want 24 top clubs to be playing in two divisions by season 2004-05.

Some have already suggested that the initiative threatens the European football establishment in a similar fashion to Kerry Packer's impact on cricket 25 years ago.

They've written to 24 clubs about a stand-alone tournament to be played in midweeks

Monday's meeting has been planned as a prelude to Tuesday's meeting of the influential G14 group, which contains Europe's richest clubs.

Driving force of the Golden Cup is Carlos Garcia Pardo, who made millions selling sports rights to television.

The original concept of a closed 16-team league has been scrapped as that goes against European Union regulations.

Instead, there would be two leagues of 12, with promotion and relegation play-offs.

Organisers insist that, thanks to European law, European football's parent body, Uefa, could not prevent a competition being run parallel with the Champions League and Uefa Cup.

However, Uefa is likely to strongly oppose any alternative to its lucrative tournaments.
