The night of Halloween – notorious for tricks, treats and unexpected surprises – certainly lived up to its billing for the Bianconeri’s three Champions League Group E rivals involved in midweek domestic cup action.
Three days after seeing Manchester United cut their lead at the top of the Premiership to a single point, Chelsea exacted revenge with a thrilling 5-4 Capital One Cup victory at Stamford Bridge. Roberto Di Matteo’s Blues showed plenty of character after falling behind on three separate occasions, with David Luiz, Cahill and Hazard pegging the Red Devils back to force extra time. Goals from Sturridge and Ramires wrestled the encounter back in the hosts’ favour before Sir Alex Ferguson’s side reduced the deficit with a late consolation.
Over in Denmark, Nordsjaelland saw their defence of the Danish domestic trophy come to a premature end following a home defeat to Midtjylland. Extra-time was also required to separate the sides at Farum Park, with strikes from Ticinovic and Lindberg not enough to prevent the Wild Tigers from crashing out of the competition.
Elsewhere, Shakhtar replicated their superb league form in the Ukrainian Cup with a dominant away showing against Hoverla Uzhhorod. After Fernandinho’s opener was cancelled out by the hosts, Lucescu’s men upped the ante and secured victory with three goals in ten second-half minutes from Teixeira, Adriano and Willian.
