Italy...I don't know the reason,but the fact is that the best keepers are Italian.
I thought that it is because the whole sense of the game in Italy is based on the defence and the keepers represent significant part of that concept,but I think that it is not the main reason...

That interview in all probability was before Carroll left and VDS signed, but in any case he had to say that. Its not often managers come out and say they don't have any faith in their players. The fact that he even felt it necessary to come out and say something to me indicates he had doubts over Howard.

As a shotstopper he's very good - I was very impressed with his early form but then the bloopers started happening with alarming regularity. He's a decent keeper all in all but I think the pressure may have gotten to him, in a not too dissimilar way to Taibi.

OK, they might not be the biggest names (xcept Pfaff) but for a small country like ours we produced some quality players between the posts.

Best keepers around for 06 are:

Italy's Buffon! GIGI!!!
The Czech's Cech!
Spaniard's Iker! The rest of the team might be crap, but they've got Iker.

Dida's mostly lucky, but neither he nor Julio Cesar are really at the top. Kahn's time is over, and Lehmann or Hildebrandt definitely be Germany's keeper.

The US has Kasey Keller, which is currently the best keeper in CONCACAF, Costa Rica's Porras is also pretty good (I'm Costa Rican ).

Argentina and Netherlands are great teams with not so great keepers.

Not true. Sure, they've had no luck with them recently, but from Frank Swift in the 1930s, through Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton, Ray Clemence and David Seaman, they used to be a real powerhouse.

I agree definitely with Shilton. Not with Seaman. Was he really one of which you would say "Wow he can easily win us a big tournament". Like Kahn did nearly at the last World Cup. I don't think so.

Hola, as I have written I'm also of those few who think Germany is/was one of the best nations. But I'm concerned they can hold their strong position.
Kahn is the only one of the list who is world class. Lehman is not constant. Hildebrand - don't know what to think about him. Is he really going to be a next titan. Rost good but no world class. Weidenfeller no way. Maybe he can improve.

Remember names like Ilgner, Köpke (oh my goodness), Immel, Maier, etc. and compare them to the upcoming. Germany is one their way down.

Volkan is overrated. Rüstü was good, don't know why he is placed on the bench at Fener. Is Volkan stronger then him, can't believe it.

you are right volkan isn`t ready to be a worldclass but rüştü isn`t at form and he is realy not as well as volkan at this time.and volkan is better than what he looks trust me matefener has a bad deffense and so he looks worse

The United States has always had some great keepers, perhaps our only secure position on the pitch for decades. Tony Meola was a stalwart during the 90's in which he was solid for most of the time. After 1998 Brad Freidal become our #1 and was goalkeeper of the year in 2003 for the EPL if I remember correctly. He was one of the goalkeepers in Korea and Japan during the World Cup in 2002. We also have Casey Keller who has been at Tottenham in the past and is now one of the better keepers in the Bundisliga. Don't forget about Howard at United who Sir Alex still has faith in..

It's because of our backround in several different sports that allows us have a real glut for goalkeepers. Sports such as American football and basketball really give our athletes an edge in eye-hand coordination that is ultimately the key element in goalkeeping.

Tony Meola was like the only guy on the team as cool as Alexi Lalas back then.
