Then explain to me how it is that Juve finished 2 points ahead of last year's undefeated pace, and topped their CL group while Conte was out. Oh, and don't use the "Conte gets to train them during the week" reasoning either, especially when players such as Buffon and Vucinic have specifically stated that they missed Conte greatly on the sidelines.
Could it be that most of the work is done in practice, but Conte's presence along the sidelines remains a boost? I'm not implying Marotta doesn't have a role in what we achieved, he has, but Conte's the one doing the hard work.

And then please tell me whom you would rather have as a sporting director, and how that sporting director would be able to do a better job than Marotta is doing right now. And this is the key question here. A lot of you are stating how terrible he is as a DS, but not one of you have come up with a viable alternative.
I appreciate his work for the most part and I don't think there is viable options other than him, I just don't think he's perfect.

Game over.

Not even Moggi was perfect.

Point negated.

It's just ironic that players such as Vucinic and Buffon, and Pavel Nedved himself have stated how much Conte's presence is missed on the sidelines. And in no way am I trying to diminish what Conte does for the team. But I think that it speaks volumes for the players, especially the QUALITY of the players, that they were able to perform the way they did without their coach, who at this present point in time is the face of the club. Part of that is the ability of the DS to put that type of team together.

You can go back throughout these 736 pages and you will not find me saying that Marotta is perfect. But I like the direction that this club is taking. Building a self sustaining Juve, with a re-emphasis in signing young talents to hopefully bring up through the pipeline. Having a younger, more athletic, deeper team than at any time in the last 6 seasons. Do you look at this team, even with a couple of players being on the wrong side of 30, and say to yourself "Oh God. They HAVE to win now. This window is closing, and closing fast" In other words, do you see them as Milan were viewed at this time 2 years ago and last year? I don't see that. I see a bunch of players who are still a couple of years from hitting their prime in Vidal, Giovinco, Bonucci, Caceres, players who could develop to be pillars of the next Juve in Pogba and Marrone, young players that Juve have their hands on in Boakye, and Gabbiadini, and an emphasis in scouting to bring young players through the pipeline.

He isn't perfect, he's made his mistakes, but no DS is ever, ever perfect. If the perfect DS were out there, he would be gainfully employed right now, and the club he is working for would be winning the CL every year.

Speaking of that, take a look at all the teams that have made the round of 16, and especially take a close look at those who topped their group, and compare the financial strength of those clubs to Juve. Hell, there are even several 2nd place teams who have far more financial might than Juve do at this point in time.

So what is their success over the last 18 months attributed to? Is it just Conte, is it just the players, is it just Marotta? No, to all three. It's a group effort.

Well, this isn't Rocket Science here. Anyone who knows anything about the history of Serie A, woudl realize that the only thing stopping Juve from being successful back then was a Milan squad who ranks up there with the greatest eras of a football club of ALL TIME.

Roby Baggio
Dino Baggio
Ravanelli
Vialli
Perruzzi
Kohler
Torricelli
Di Livio
Conte
Cesar Da Silva.

That was the core of the squad before Moggi came on board.

Oh, and I forgot Andreas Moller as well.

Conte's impact in practice had its importance though.

Marotta did put that team together, credit where it's due.

It's a group effort, I'm in agreement, but I do think some deserves more credit. One can buy all the best players in the world, but it's up to the coach to make it a team.

Great post all around.

First of all happy new year :xmas:

I could reverse the question and ask you guys, how can we have one of the most average defense in serie A (actually the defense was horrible) during Del Neri's time here with pretty much exactly same defenders (with the exception of Lichtsteiner). Yet when Conte took charge that defense became "faar" better !

Pirlo had a really average (even below average) last 2-3 seasons with Milan (ask any Milan fan about that) yet when he came here under Conte the guy was hands down the best player in serie A last season !

Conte "totally" transformed this team, what he did IMO is nothing short of a miracle really. He definitely had a solid/decent players to work with but I'm convinced that if we had someone else on charge of this team we won't get even close to the results that we had this season and last.

And then please tell me whom you would rather have as a sporting director, and how that sporting director would be able to do a better job than Marotta is doing right now. Not a single one of us said that he's doing a terrible job. I said it many times before, Marotta is doing a decent job here but not brilliant.

It's not my job to pick the sporting director for this club, personally I believe many in serie A could've done a similar work. So I see nothing special in the guy.

Happy New Year to you as well, friend.

To answer your first question, well, you answered it for me. Del Neri. Zonal Marking in this day and age simply doesn't work anymore, yet that was the system that he insisted upon during his brief time at Juve. Keep in mind though with the defense that 2 starters on the team that won the Scudetto last year were players that were acquired before Conte arrived in Barzagli and Bonucci. So, while Conte did a great job of transforming the defense, the core of said defense was already there to begin with. I don't blame that defense on a lack of quality that year, but a lack of a vaible defensive system.

Pirlo is a combination of coaching, motivation to prove the doubters wrong, and being around players who were quick enough to put his anticipated passes into effective use.

There's alot of truth to both only-juve's and TrezJuve's arguments. I'm all for giving Conte the most credit as well, I've said this all along. But yeah, I love Marotta too, I think he's done an amazing job and that we couldn't ask for a better sporting director. I'm also glad to see that the Society's Marotta Defense System (SMDS©™) is operating as smoothly as it is :touched:

One more thing before I go and enjoy the New Year's Festivities.

Well, 2 things.

First and Foremost, I wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.

Secondly, and this is something that I would like people to think about, especially think about this squad in the last 6 years.

From 2006-2010, it is very safe to say that this squad was very Del Piero dependent, even when the signs were there that he could no longer do it, week in , week out, and was saddled with a burden that quite frankly was unfair to be saddled with at his age.

At various points of last year, there were loud whispers that this team was very Pirlo depnedent. If he wasn't playing well, Juve had no chance.

Take a look at this team in 2012 and beyond. Who are they dependent upon? Who does Juve absolutely need to have to be playing at the top of his game, or else the team has no chance of winning?

Think about that. Take a look at the game footage if you must, read the game reports. The answer will surprise.

The answer is...........................................................................................................................................................Nobody.

The team is amazingly balanced, in spite of the fact that there is no top striker. That, my friends, speaks of the quality and the amount of quality on this team, to not have to rely on one player playing well all the time in order for them to win.

And that speaks of the work of both Conte and Marotta. There are a boatload of teams who would love to be in the position that Juve have been in the past 18 months, guys. We as juventus fans are very lucky that the stars have aligned the way they have, and that there is a foundation of trust and teamwork between coach and ownership who are on the same page.
