Pazienza was signed for $0, he played a prominent role in a team which did much better than us last season. He was not signed as a Pirlo backup, more likely as a MArchisio, and even more likely, Vidal backup.

Lichsteiner is a top drawer RB. Chiellini is a solid as Hades LB. We have two good fullbacks. Agreed, we have in reserve two 'shitty ones'.

I don't see the problem with Bonucci that many others seem to...for he has been fine. YES, I feel chiellini and barzagli would be far more secure, and if we do grab Caceres, then when injuries and suspensions kick in, we will likely see Martin at LB, Giorgio and Andrea in the middle and the swiss nazi at RB, which would be, on paper at least, stronger than our presently preferred Chiellini/Bonucci/Barzagli/Lichsteiner setup. But essentially, I see no problem with Bonucci starting alongside the calmer, more composed Barzagli, and Chiellini at LB.

My understanding, which may be wayward, of this mercato, is that we are trying to add quality and depth to Defence, Midfield and Attack. With Amauri, Big Vinnycenzo and Toni nothing to do with Conte's plans, and hopefully leaving, it makes sense to bring in some depth, which Borriello supplies. As for midfield, we seem interested in Montolivio and Pizzarro...both of whom seem naturally capable of shouldering the burden of Regista which Pirlo presently shoulders alone. The other main suggestion, is of Caceres, who is apt playing LB/RB, or even CB...

So...we seem to be adding depth, economically, to Defence, Midfield, Attack...would you not agree?

Chiellini is by no means as good a fullback as Lichtsteiner. He's simply a stop-gap solution and you can tell. He may hold fort well down back but he's still rubbish going forward especially in comparison to Lichtsteiner. Its just a massive waste to not play Chiellini at CB and by playing players out of their position you're not getting the true value out of the squad. Bonucci has been better this season but he's not nearly up to the standard Chiellini has set.

Even with the exclusion of Toni, Amauri and Iaquinta we still have loads of depth up forward. Pepe, Giacherrini, Elia, Estigarribia, Matri, DP, Quag and Vucinic all fighting for three positions assuming we'll continue using the 4-3-3. The Borriello transfer was complete nonsense.

Yes we seem to be adding depth in some areas while completely neglecting others. First a team should find balance, then depth. Its rubbish that we look to add another striker while Chiellini is our current left back.

well people are not happy with the quality of the starting lineup, hence the grumbling for adding depth over quality.

The only problem last summer was not getting a LB (and selling the dead weight), but that situation was temporarily fixed moving Chiellini out left and Bonucci/Barzagli getting on well in the middle. Obviously Bonucci is the weak link, every team has one and for our defense it's him. But he isn't as bad as some make him out to be.

As of now we have the second best defense in the league with only 11 conceded (behind udinese), however we have the 3rd best attack behind Milan/Napoli and tied with Inter. We still don't have a game changer up top, which we need, we have the best midfield that anyone could ask for and our RB, CBs and top notch with a WC goalie.

Like I said, people will always find something to complain over. And when you complain over EVERYTHING, eventualy you will be right. *cough*cron*cough*

We do need CMs/SSs for the bench and one SS to start. We need to sell the shit we have plaguing our bench and bring in some talent that can give more to this team that Amauri, Grosso, Motta, IQ and Toni can. So yes, despite some people's grumblings it does make sense to bring in such positions for proper depth. Pazienza only covers a certain aspect to the game, the club doesn't seem to trust Marrone just yet and who knows about the young Appelt.

Take Udinese for example, only 10 goals conceded but you wouldn't put anyone on that backline/goalie anywhere close to Buffon's, Chiellini's, Lichts levels and to an extent even Barz (this season of course)...you don't need 4 WC players across the backline to win games, rather more importantly how the back line works as a Unit. However, if you want to win league titles, every team needs a player up top that can make the difference and break down the small teams to bring home the points.

I never mentioned anything suggesting Chiellini was as good a fullback as Lichsteiner. I see him as still brillian tin the tackle, often furious in the tackle, and compared with de ceglie, incredibly more potent defensively, but no, he is obviously not near to Lich's levels...

Whilst Pepe is playing high up the field this season, and doing rather well most of the time, he is naturally a wide midfielder/winger, not a striker. Estigarribia seems more as useful defensively as offensively, he is no striker. Giaccherini is of a similar story; more useful offensively than esti, but still, not a striker. Elia can be called somewhat of a striker, but he needs to start out wide...So we have vucinic, DP, Matri, Quags and now Borriello who I would call strikers.

Its up to Conte how offensive he makes his offence. Clearly deploying the likes of Pepe and Giaccherini either side of a prima punta is very defensive, and fielding vucinic and elia either side of a prima punta is totally offensive. The trident up top is sometimes wingers and one forward, sometimes one forward, one second striker and a winger. Avoiding Amauri/iaquinta/toni, we have a surplus still, but not a huge one. Vuc and Matri get injured and then what??? Quags is nowhere near back to his best yet...who would we play up top?? a slowly regaining sharpness Quags, or who else??? Borriello I assume.

As for our left back issue...perhaps we have earmarked someone for the Summer, someone Conte wants, someone we can get, but he is not available right now.

A situation is only fixed when you have well-defined starters and proper backup.

I have never disputed that we are lacking depth in defence and other areas, nor will I, until we have another regista, more backup for Marchisio and Vidal than just pazienza, a starting specialist lb, a solid challenger/understudy/backup to Lichsteiner. As for a centre back...I don't think its needed if Chiellini moves back to the middle, and we purchase a decent LB. Bonucci/Barzagli/Sorensen/Chiellini seems enough. Ideally, a team should have two players for every position, which is hard for us to achieve presently due to the formation/s still in the larval stage.

The mixture of the squad is better this season. One of the main improvements, is the increase in players comfortable on the ball. This has been intentional, as last season and the one before, we had games (strangely almost solely in the post christmas periods) in which we looked very uncomfortable on the ball, wasting passes, no dribbling, nobody always wanting the ball at their feet. Vidal, Pirlo, Vucinic...lichsteiner...elia...all these players love the ball. That was needed.

Our front line has been fucked for a while. Secco's contracts havent helped. Vucinic and Matri have some real quality about them, one has lots of flair and intelligence on the ball, the other a top drawer finisher. There remains a huge question mark over Quagiarella...DP is too old to be consistently useful

The central midfield needs challengers/backups...Marrone and Appelt could well prove useful, alongside pazienza. They even seem, a little like the Marchisio/Pirlo/Vidal combination we use for starters.

Most people are well aware of what we need. Getting it is a different matter. Nowhere near as simple as 'right lets get a LB, a backup LB, a backup RB, backup Pirlo'...what quality players want to come here as a backup????Nobody is going to displace out midfield trio, nor chiellini, nor barzagli, nor lichsteiner. Which makes it harder to bring in quality.

Much work still to do, of course, but since last Summer, we have made some brilliant progress. much of it down to beppe. much of it down to conte.
