Buffon

Motta - Bonucci - Chiellini - De Ceglie/Grosso

Krasic - Marchisio - Melo - Pepe

Amauri - Del Piero

This squad? Nah, that squad was closer to 7th than 4th.
an even more pathetic squad than this went 2nd twice, please do not tell me that there were 6 teams in Italy that had a better team than that.

and you're forgetting Aquilani.

One just needs to calculate the total costs of the bad players he bought. I bet that figure is pretty darn infuriating. :D
To say the least. Also he didn't build a better team than the one he disbanded in his first season here. So far, he hasn't done anything to convince me that he's the best man for this make or break mercato. I'd like Conte to have a bigger say this year coz I don't trust Marrotta.

This is what everyone is afraid of, that he will not be able to deliver on this.

However, this poses a very interesting dilemna.

Can you fire a DS who had a hand in turning around a 7th place team to a CL squad in 2 years, without giving him the chance to be able to acquire the players?

And what i am going to say next even confuses me when I think about it. How far along in the summer do you go, if the reality sets in that he can't obtain said CL quality players, before you fire him?

It's a very delicate issue, when you think about it.

You say to yourself, "OK, Marotta. You helped get Juve this far, now its time to step up and take it to the next level."

But the transfer window is 2 months long, its not a sprint. Do people call for his heads if no significant activity takes place within the first three weeks?

Moggi was at his best during the last 2 weeks of the transfer window (Zlatan on the last day, for example)
he's at his worst in his last day...buying boriello really dissapointed me as he didn't learned anything from his previous mistakes.

Edited and fixed for you

Bullshit, with a proper coach the squad we had was at least good enough for a 4th place finish. And as Ahmed alluded too earlier, we were destroyed badly by injuries last season. I dont buy this "he built us a 7th place team" rubbish.

Its not better than Milan, Inter and Napoli. So its basically us and Udinese for the 4th and Udinese had a better team last year when they still had guys like Sanchez and Inler.

Going into the middle of January last season, that squad was in 2nd place. Injuries then took their toll, and as a result, it turned into a full blown crisis last year.

Marotta's biggest mistake last year was bringing in Del Neri to coach the squad.

This year, the injuries are now starting to add up a little, though not to the level that last year brought. This year's squad is a more talented bunch than last year, and they have a proper coach to guide them through the tough times.

But let's not forget that last year's squad was doing well until everything collapsed.

I think that's nonsense.
Was Bonnucci at 15m and Marco Motta, better value than the outgoing players? Caceres, Molinaro and Grygera were never suitably replaced.

Were Martinez and Pepe better than the outgoing Camoranesi or Giovinco? Krasic was a good buy.

Were targets like DiNatale, Borriello and eventually his third choice Quag enough to replace the outgoing Diego and Trezeguet?

The biggest loophole in all of this was, that he hired a coach who wanted to play the 442, and failed to identify or redress the main issue that formation needed. Wing play. The most basic issues weren't addressed, while the expenditure hadn't decreased. It will explain to you why Marchisio was played out on the wing.

Marrotta failed to approach this like a big club SD would. He failed to build a platform, let alone a team. And of course needless to say, all the above mentioned players were put on the market at the start of last season including Martinez, Bonnucci and Pepe, while Krasic will be in the months ahead, and if Quag is unlucky he will be too. Had he only bought 3 or 4 players, an RB, an LB, a replacement for Amauri who had been shit for an entire year before Marrotta came, and a better LM than Martinez, albeit in the 12m category, this team would've already been in the CL with guys like Camoranesi, Diego, Giovinco, Del Piero and Trezeuget. Easily.

I read that wrongly, I thought you said the current team wasn't better than the one he basically disbanded after his first season; ie Krasic, Motta, Aquilani, Melo etc.

Conte is a great coach obviously but if Marotta listens to him about every transfer I'm afraid we will end up with players that have more grinta than pure talent.

In April 2008, coach Antonio Conte compared him to Cristiano Ronaldo, stating that he has the possibility and potential to reach similar levels in his football and quoting "Lanzafame has improved tactically” to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He is explosive, he sniffs the goal, and imposes his speed outside the area. If he improves and learns he can become like Cristiano Ronaldo."
