Marotta's moves have all been predicated on taking shortcuts to 3rd place. That's why you see loans and deals for Toni, Giach, Barzagli. Average players familiar with Serie A. Selling Diego immediately and going for Di Natale and then Quagliarella, known players who can score in Serie A immediately. Marotta was hoping they could add just enough quality without breaking the bank to get 3rd and then move from there. They were all band-aids. Some worked ok and some didn't. Martinez was a giant fuck up.
I'll still maintain that our roster last year was good enough for 4th and this year is good enough for 3rd. The coaching has been our undoing. Marotta is hit and miss with transfers like most directors but I'm more worried about his lack of footballing philosophy, being content with handing over free reign to coaches that use tactics from the 50s. Our coaching has done nothing to help or augment our players. Everyone looks terrible in our system except the playmakers or players that can take games into their own hands (Melo, DP, Quagliarella, Chiellini).
