Buffon: 'I'll be back in 2011'
Sunday 27 June, 2010
Gianluigi Buffon announces he will have surgery to resolve his back problem. “In 2011 I’ll be back as good as new.”
The Juventus and Italy goalkeeper has been struggling with injury all season and managed just 45 minutes of the World Cup before suffering a herniated disc.

He had hoped to rush his recovery for during the tournament, but Italy’s early exit means he will take drastic steps.

“I have decided. I’ve had enough of living with this uncertainty, so I will have surgery,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The operation won’t be immediately, but in 2011 I’ll be back as good as new. I might even return earlier, but I won’t kid myself.

“Let’s just say I am focusing on January for my comeback. I intend to take all the time I need.”

When there was originally talk of surgery in South Africa, Buffon was expected to be out for three months, but he is now looking at an even longer-term strategy.

“I’ll tell the truth, I should’ve done this sooner, but I was always told that people needed me. Now I’m the one who is in need.

“Besides, Juventus are in safe hands with Marco Storari and Alex Manninger.”

An appointment is set with the Juventus medical staff and Buffon’s orthopaedic specialist on July 5 with surgery likely later that same week.

“It was important for me to talk it over with Alessandro Nesta,” revealed the goalkeeper.

“He also had the same problem and resolved it with surgery. At that point it swept away any lingering doubts.”

Shattered, I am going to watch Juve play in December and 1 match in January and Buffon most likely won't be there.

Buffon, Schmeichel and Kahn are the best I have seen!

I can't believe the season hasn't even started and we are already going to be missing our most important player/personality for 6 months :depressed

If the surgery cures the problem, it is worth giving up six months.

Better that than him missing three months every season for several years.

Still, at least Marotta has moved fast to ensure proper cover is in place.

Meh.

I'm not convinced the title was a realistic target for Juve this season anyway.

Even if Juve have a great mercato, it will take time for all the players to be moulded into a functioning unit.
