who does think that football players are smart anyway ... what does challenge your intelligence when you kick the ball all the time?

I know its sometime difficult to get past Chieminti's performances :D but saying that football players are not smart is just plain bull. They might not be nuclear engineers but I guess they are smart in their own way. Noone can say that players like Platini are stupid. Platini is now into politics which requires some brains. Even playing a football match requires intellegence when to attack and when to defend. They might not be the best academically, but I totally disagree in saying that they are not smart.

i did not mean to say that they have to be stupid.
it is just (like you already said) that their job does not require them to be really smart. surely you can't be total stupid, a little smartness is required, but then on the other hand you can teach dogs the wildest tricks ... so you should be able to teach a dumbhead a few tactics. there are a few positions that do need few knowledge of tactic i guess ...

the goal keeper is such a thing. there are a bunch of former "great" footballers like maradonna that seem to be dumb as hell. instinct will help on the pitch as well and so even when they are hailed by many supporters, they do not necessarily be role models in other aspects in life.

their job does not force them to inform themselves about e.g. politics. so it is completely understandable that they may find awkward theories and politic directions appealing.

If you are refering to Maradona as dumb ass for taking drugs (which i agree on) there are many examples of LEADERS who are on crack as well. So this point is not valid for footballers.
To be as creative as Zidane or Del Piero you need to be intellegent yourself. Academic achievement is one thing and intellegence is something else. I wouldn't be surprised if a footballer had a higher IQ than a NASA engineer. Just because he did not develop himself academically doesn't make him less of brain case. In fact, most of the really successful people aren't outstandingly brilliant, they are just simply hard workers in the field they have excelled in. And for someone to be outstanding in his field he/she has to love it. A successful footballer is a player who works hard to keep himself going at the highest level. I'll take Del Piero as an example, he is talented beyound imagination, but if he wasn't a hardworking man he would have quited 10 years ago when he had his injury. Instead he faught hard against all odds, he stood high when all critics were against him and now at the age of 33-34 HE IS STILL UNSTOPPABLE and maybe the world best player. Maradona might be more talented but he is not half of the player/person Del Piero is. Thats a personaly opinion ofcourse.
