Buffon: We Can Fight For The Scudetto

Gianluigi Buffon says that Juventus have proved that they can fight for the Scudetto but he says the most important thing this season is to ensure qualification for next year’s Champions League.

The Bianconeri were expected to struggle this campaign following their post-Calciopoli promotion from Serie B.

While a number of world-class stars left the club last summer, such as Fabio Cannavaro, Patrick Vieira and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Buffon stayed loyal and his presence has proven vital as Juventus currently sit in third place in the league at the winter break.

“Playing in Serie B with Juve was a unique experience, but for me the biggest surprise is that 2007 has gone past without changing my life,” the world’s best goalkeeper said.

“I am still a goalkeeper, and I am still playing for a great club and for La Nazionale.

“We have proved we can fight for the Scudetto. Nonetheless, I would still be happy with third or fourth place – we need to be back in the Champions League.”

Buffon also looked ahead to next summer’s European Championships with the Azzurri. Italy will go into the tournament as one of the favourites and Buffon is full of confidence.

“We know that we are strong thanks to the victory in the World Cup. Before Germany 2006 we used to struggle, but not anymore. We will surprise again.” he declared.

Buffon’s New Year hopes

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has spoken of his hopes for 2008 after his wife gave birth to their first child yesterday.

The Bianconeri No 1, who has been with Alena Seredova for nearly three years now, is delighted with how the past 12 months have gone – but he is hoping for so much more.

“Playing in Serie B with Juve was a unique experience, but for me the biggest surprise is that 2007 has gone past without changing my life,” he said.

“I am still a goalkeeper, and I am still playing for a great club and for La Nazionale.”

After fighting back from the Calciopoli scandal, Juventus have had a great season so far and are surprisingly in third position.

“We have proved we can fight for the Scudetto. Nonetheless, I would still be happy with third or fourth place – we need to be back in the Champions League,” he added.

And Gigi has one last wish about La Nazionale and the forthcoming European Championship in Austria and Switzerland.

“We know that we are strong thanks to the victory in the World Cup. Before Germany 2006 we used to struggle, but not anymore. We will surprise again.” he concluded.

Julio Cesar is being pretty good for them though. But Buffon is on another level.

Buffon is my best GK.
2nd Frey
3rd Casillas

I liked Cech very much before his injury but his performances have dropped ever since while Frey and Casillas are doing a great job for a number of years already.....

You can't put Frey ahead of Cech and Casillas. Frey has only done well in Serie A, and on the few occasions he played with the French NT, he choked.

1) Gigi
2) Casillas
3) Cech

Before his head injury i would have said that Cech would be second closer to Buffon than Casillas is, but his injury seems to have made him lose that something extra he had

MC, Frey didn´t choke. He wasn´t given a proper chance. How do you mean he only did well in Serie A? Frey has been making consistently world class saves for a number of years and was always reliable and up to the standard.

casillas at this moment should be the #2 after gigi albeit a gap in skills and talent. if it wasn't for him, real would've conceded more goals considering how porous still their defense is. the defense that showed up for barca was an anomaly. though cech's form has dipped and he's flapping quite a bit lately but still he's no. 3 for me.

anyway a belated congratulation is in order for gigi and alena for their newborn baby! another bianconeri is born! :juvefan2: :flag:
