Emanuele Giaccherini has reflected on a whirlwind 2011/12 campaign which culminated in the winger’s inclusion in Cesare Prandelli’s European Championship squad.
The 27-year-old, who joined the Bianconeri from Cesena last summer, sought to thank Antonio Conte for enabling him to make the step up from Serie A football to Europe’s biggest stage.
“I’ve spoken to Conte over the past few days and I’ve thanked him for what he’s given me,” the winger told a press conference. “If I’m here then it is mainly down to him. I’ve had difficult moments throughout my career, I’ve also been turned down because of my physique – but I’ve always got going again.”
Giaccherini’s versatile qualities have proved invaluable to Conte throughout the course of the Bianconeri’s title-winning campaign, and the winger is also putting these to good use with the national side, staking his claim for a wing-back berth as Prandelli tests a number of formations.
“We’re trying different solutions as we’ve got players who are able to change system during the course of the game. I’m perfectly happy playing wide in a 3-5-2 system.
“You have to sacrifice yourself a lot because you’re required to cover the whole flank, but I have the physical and technical abilities to succeed.”
