Gerrard vs Lampard (4 Viewers)

Saw this somewhere, and considering all the hype about the Stevie G is he going or not... maybe we need this...

Who is the more overrated player in the past 12 months.

BOTH
- less skillful
- can't dribble
- base their game on hardwork and tough tackles
- prefer long balls which only seem to work against weak opponents
- are bursting with glory due to the hardwork of other players ... Makelele and Xabi Alonso.

Gerrard
- singlehandedly lost a game against France with his stupid back pass
- Single-handedly lost a cup to Chelsea
- Liverpool progressed in the UCL without him. Came in the final to score a header against Milan's old defense and people say he was carrying Liverpool

Lampard
- takes long aimless shots from outside the 18 yards area. If he happen to score on of those, people claim he is the best midfielder ever
- his shots to goal ratio is embarassing

Good base idea for a thread mate but saying they are both overrated, to the degree you think is somewhat harsh.

Gerrard is a decent player, no doubt about it. When he wants to exert his will on a game, at least in the Premiership, he generally does. However he can go missing for whole chunks of a season, which is possibly one of the reasons Liverpool lack consistency.

Clearly he's technically limited, he doesn't have the skills, range of passing of Xabi Alonso and never will, but on the whole he does his job well. However the press tend to overglorify his performances - witness AC Milan's self destruction for which he was given sole credit by the majority of the press.

Lampard though is in the form of his life, consistently scoring a hell of a lot of goals and never goes missing. His side dominated the premiership and he was probably the key player in it. Easily the better player imo, due to his all round game. And you cite his shooting from far out as a rwason, well a fair proportion hit the target and several - each season - scream into the back of the net. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as Nedved will tell you!

Lampard is overrated, Chelsea play 5 midfield, so Lampard has 2 defensive midfielders with him. They do all the leg work when he ****s up and lose the ball, either by hitting the ball 100 yard over the goal, or by a missed placed pass. At a smaller team where he'd have to keep hold of the ball, he'd be crap.

huh thats stupid. Gerrard and Lampard are both actually great. Tom, passing range? Gerrard lacks that? I would go as far as to say Gerrard the most accurate long pass in the game!

I said he doesn't have the range of passing of Xabi Alonso.. didn't say he couldn't pass the ball.

I would say his range of passing is still the best. Ive seen several games where he has passed the ball amazing distances.. I think it was a couple of years ago when Pool were in the UEFA cup, he did this unreal long pass to owen when he was the lone player on the otherside of the pitch. Cant remember the name of the match though, sorry. Just remember the commentators saying: Was Gerrard really looking for Owen there??

That example aside, can you give others that point to his consistensy?
Pirlo does it regularly for both Milan and Italy...
Xabi with his passing abilities guided Pool (with Gerrard) through to the UCL final. Notice a change in Pool's game when he was out?
Who is the main man in Mexico's amazing run in the Confederation's Cup? And who does all the beautiful marking and passing that leaves Ronnie and Deco free to play in Barca? Marquez and Xavi.

of course thats true. Maybe i exgerated a little, but he is within the top 5 passers IMO in the world.

Both are key figures in their team, but are way too overrated..

Gerrard has good passing, defensive, and leadership skills, making him a good(maybe great) player, but certainly not a *legend*..

Frank "Deflected Shot" Lampard is a good central midfielder, but it's certain that he wouldn't appear as good as he is now without the help of Makalele and co. in the midfield..

They're both overrated but at the same time very good players.

Physically they're both very good.

Gerrard has the better tackle and his versatility and work ethic make him a rather useful squad player. Personally I don't think he relies on Xabi Alonso as much as Lampard relies on Makelele.

Lampard is the better player going forward for sure. Gerrard can hit them from range but so can Lamps who has a much better finish and tends to get into better positions. Passing goes to Gerrard IMO but not by a lot, while Lampard is the more skillful player. Neither of them can really dribble though.

I think I'd go with Lampard but Gerrard is a quality player as well.

Without Makelele, Hamann and Alonso, Gerard and Lampard would both be regarded as crap. Gerard does seem able to knock a pass an amazing distance with the outside of his foot, andm IMO, that puts him way above Lampard.

i call that playing your cards right. it is the coach who knows what a player can or cannot do. find the perfect possition and watch the player do their thing. who cares if lampard cant defend. chelsea are still scoring even with 2 DMs and lampard is scoring most of them

Both are good players. Ofcourse they wouldn't be able to do their job so well when there weren't Makelele, Hamann or Alonso beside them. But everyone has a specific purpose on the pitch. Theirs is to pass the ball and help with the attack. What do you expect from them? That they'd be the goalkeeper, central defender, left winger and striker all at once or something.

It's funny how the english tend to overrate their players while rest of the world does their best to underrate them.
