Gentile names Olympic party
Friday 9 July, 2004

Milan’s Andrea Pirlo is one of 30 players named in a provisional Italian squad to take part at the Olympic Games.

Under-21 boss Claudio Gentile (pictured) has the option to select three over aged stars and the Rossoneri man is one of five selected at this stage.

He’s joined by Roma ‘keeper Ivan Pelizzoli, defenders Cesare Natali of Atalanta and Parma’s Matteo Ferrari, plus Parma midfielder Simone Barone.

The Azzurrini tactician has until July 21 to finalise a 22-man squad that will take part in the Athens competition.

Provisional squad: Federico Agliardi (Brescia); Marco Amelia (Livorno); Alberto Aquilani (Roma); Simone Barone (Parma); Andrea Barzagli (Chievo); Rolando Bianchi (Cagliari); Daniele Bonera (Parma); Cesare Bovo (Roma); Matteo Brighi (Juventus); Paolo Cannavaro (Parma); Andrea Caracciolo (Brescia); Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus); Daniele De Rossi (Roma); Simone Del Nero (Brescia); Marco Donadel (Parma); Matteo Ferrari (Parma); Damiano Ferronetti (Roma); Andrea Gasbarroni (Palermo); Alberto Gilardino (Parma); Giandomenico Mesto (Reggina); Emiliano Moretti (Parma); Cesare Natali (Atalanta); Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria); Ivan Pelizzoli (Roma); Giampiero Pinzi (Udinese); Andrea Pirlo (Milan); Alessandro Potenza (Parma); Giuseppe Sculli (Chievo); Cristian Zaccardo (Palermo); Carlo Zotti (Roma).

Four of our players, not bad. Add Gilardino and Bonera to that and we're one of the biggest contributors to the squad ;)

Well, you gotta put them as favourites since they've won the U-21's like 4 times out of 5 now is it? Impressive

Especially if you look at the squad, most of them, if not all, are Serie A players, and first choices in their clubs... Bonera, Ferrari, Gilardino, Pirlo , etc.

Well yeah.. ferrari has got to be a class above any of the other defenders in the tournament (ok i haven't seen the squads but come on..the guy is quality) and the same goes for gila. if those two are firing on all cylinders i can't really anticipate any problems for them.

Having said that i hope they fail miserably, it would be funny to hear some more conspiracy theories :D
