It has been a very interrupted season so far for Genoa, which has already seen three different coaches on the sidelines. The away fixtures have been an issue throughout and have yielded just eight of a possible 30 points in the campaign so far. The record reads: two wins, two draws and six losses.
The Rossoblu have conceded just 13 goals on their travels, which (excluding Torino) is significantly better than any other team outside the top four. However, with just seven goals scored from their ten away encounters, the problem for the Grifone has been a lack of attacking potency.
The away matches kicked off in dramatic fashion for Genoa with a 3-2 defeat against Catania. The Ligurians drew level on 2-2 through Jankovic in the 82nd minute before Lodi nicked a late winner to snatch the points. In the next fixture away from the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the Rossoblu caused a grand upset by claiming all three points at the Stadio Olimpico, with Borriello getting on the scoresheet in the 79th minute to seal Lazio’s defeat.
After a 0-0 stalemate with Udinese, the Grifone’s next away outing took them to the San Siro to face AC Milan. Stephan El Shaarawy netted what proved to be the decisive goal against his former employers. This defeat was the first of a five game losing run to begin Delneri’s time at the helm. The new coach achieved his first success during a trip to Bergamo, where Bertolacci gave his side a 1-0 win over Atalanta.
This result was followed by a 2-0 loss to fellow relegation candidates Pescara. Delneri’s side then returned to Milan to face the black and blue stripes of Inter. The visitors stole the lead through Immobile, but it only lasted ten minutes as Cambiasso hit back with an equaliser just five minutes from time.
The most recent match on the road was a painful experience. The Rossoblu once again found themselves with an away lead, but Cagliari drew level soon after and then, in the 82nd minute, Conti broke the away side’s hearts and secured three points for the hosts. The result in this crucial encounter saw Pulga’s men leapfrog Genoa in the table, which threw them right back into the midst of the relegation battle.
Earlier this month, after a 2-0 victory over Bologna, the Grifone would have been confident of survival in the top flight. However, two consecutive defeats have spelled the end of Delneri’s managerial spell as his side crept into the drop zone, three points behind 17th place Pescara. New coach Ballardini will hope for a successful tenure at the Ligurian club but starts with a tough assignment, a trip to Juventus Stadium on Saturday.
