As for the subject, both are right, some people have a choice others don't. In this case nature and nurture both play a part depending on where you grow up, the mass media you're influenced with, and the demographics of your area.
At the same time a belief in religion is indeed an irrational act. Christians weren't persecuted by the Romans because their ideals were logical. Religion defies logic.
If you follow a religion that doesn't mean you're an idiot or a hack. You just have an illogical belief in philosophy. That's why they call it faith. You may have very logical beliefs aside from your weekly contribution at church. Many people believe in the illogical and go on to be very great contributers to society.
