Marchisio has his good days and his bad days. He's been very inconsistent over the last couple years, and he gets bashed because he was praised as the more promising youths to come out of Juventus. I think people were really clinging onto him, hoping he would be world-class but it never happened. He's not a poor player, but he's no Lampard or Gerrard either. I don't think our misfortunes comes solely because of Marchisio, I think as a team we have a lack of communication, a lack of vision, a lack of awareness, and the inability to string passes together. From the back line to the attackers, our team struggles so much.
I'm really lost with this team, because its not like its a terrible bunch of players. Chiellini, Pirlo, Vidal, Krasic, Vucinic, but the team still has troubles finding consistency.

Despite living in a tremendously shitty time zone for Juventus games, where I have to wake up at 5:45AM on most Sundays to catch the action - on a shitty 5 inch stream no less - for the past 4 years or so I've probably only missed between 5-10 games a season (including Coppa, European commitments, etc).
Anybody who watched this team week in and week out, should realize that Melo was easily one of our best players last year. There was just so much residual hate for him from the previous season - and of course the infamous Parma incident - that some people refuse to adequately acknowledge his on field ability (not you). There are people here who talked about him as though he's one of our worst - which is fucking ridiculous.
I think it's totally unfair to say that the rest of the team's play was worse because they were worried about Melo going off. These are big boys here, they need to be accountable for their performances. We're talking about guys like Motta, Grosso, Traore, Pepe, Martinez, etc. We had so many useless players. The forwards weren't demonstrably affected by Melo. Maybe you can make a case for a guy like Sorenson, in that Melo's attitude isn't the best role model for a youngster, except that Sorenson played well beyond expectations, which basically eliminates the theory about Melo's on field play affecting him, IMO.
We haven't really secured any return on the guy, which drives me fucking insane. He was a valuable asset, and I just have a feeling that a 3 man midfield of Melo - Pirlo - Vidal would have been simply outstanding - totally intimidating for our opponents. Badass. I think they would have complemented each other very well. The midfield doesn't have to be 'based' around him, or whatever; he just has to play a part.
For the record, I never like the arguments where people talk about 'basing' a system around a single player. That's not exactly what you're doing here, but you're talking about basing the midfield around Melo, but last I checked, we'll always have at least 6-8 midfielders on our team. This is a team game, the best players we have should be on the field, and the players we purchase should be pushing the worst players out of the team. This is something our management continuously fails to realize. There was space for Melo in this team tactically, and certainly room for his quality.
Our purchases have been underwhelming for quite awhile, but when you consider the guys we've let go since Calciopoli - the FB's (Balza, Cassani, Criscito), and guys like Giovinco, Trezeguet, Diego, Melo - hell, it's silly. They're not all world beaters, not by any delusional stretch of the imagination, but you know what? Every single one of those guys is better than at least one of the backups at their position - especially if our coaches were flexible with our formation. Every single one of those guys we actively sought to release.
Combined with all of the poor coaching selections, all this team does is take one step forward, before promptly taking two steps back.
Anyway, hopefully the mercato ends well, and we'll finally see some progress this season.

I feel very confident that Melo saved us more points than he cost us. This team was fucking brutal, he was covering for an absolutely pathetic defense; his mistakes usually come when he's trying to do too much. I know you're well aware of the 'stability' that surrounded the guy.

Our team is lacking quality, and Melo was legitimately one of our VERY best players last year. That's just the way it is. Our team was pretty darn shitty. We have secured almost nothing to date (1.5M? Or something?) on a 25M euro investment from two years ago, that could have been very useful to the team this season. He'll be 29 after the season, and if he doesn't do well in Turkey, and Gala doesn't pick up the option, that investment is going to deteriorate even further. That transaction is an absolutely retarded piece of business IMO, pure and simple.

You're exaggerating how frequently he had these 'brain farts'. If he made 2-3 actual costly mistakes a game it wouldn't go unnoticed by over half the forum. He definitely redeemed himself for his mistakes from the 09/10 season and his red card verse Parma. The only player that was willing to take the game and at time was forced to act beyond his role due to the inadequacies of Aquilani which led to occasional errors. But what's important is that he had the courage and determination to try and win games for us. Bonucci did pretty much the same thing for Motta last season.
