Well, I can tell you what I have observed for the past few weeks. I live in Gothenburg, Sweden and on the 3rd of september Eminem and 50 Cent are having a concert in town. You cannot imagine tha amount of wannabee gangs that are around at the moment.

I guess this is one of the biggest influences.
Exakt :D btw, are u going? I'm not.. dont listen to hip hop.

I've read a lot about "chavs", armed guys raping girls, immigrant gangs, local gangs, etc recently on here.

I dont hear much about it in the US however. Or maybe nowhere near as much. Even among low-income groups or minorities, or drop-outs, etc.

Why do you think there seems to be such a big problem regarding gangs and violence in Europe while the US's problems with gangs/violence seems much more minor?

Do you even think that is the case at all? Perhaps its the same or even more in the US?

I want to know what people think is the cause of these problems.
I don't think Europe has ever had gang wars on the scale the US has witnessed them. I don't recall a massive urban riot a la early 90's LA on this side of the Atlantic. Probably also because it's virtually impossible for our scum to face each other with an arsenal of guns and rifles. I mean, a kid with a gun here instantly becomes the "big guy".

Chavs are just useless British kids harassing ppl in order to get some cigarettes and money. According to Jaecole or Claire they're dangerous. Maybe they are, though I'd like to see them deal with some of the meanies you got over there, or with our "scugnizzi" in Naples and Palermo.

The impression I got though from frequenting a few of your ill-reputed areas is that since most of these guys are generally armed, it's pretty useless to worry about it : if they want to fvck you up, they'll shoot you and it will be over before you can say Tupac Shakur, so watcha gonna do?

I remember walking through Roxbury (Boston) with my Puerto Rican friend Raul and hearing a whistle indicating that we shouldn't take that street because some bastards were approaching. I was high and drunk so found all this quite amusing at the time and felt kind of proud to be the only "whitey" in such a vast perimeter. But Raul was pretty serious, especially with a 13 year old brother who was already mugging ppl and playing with guns.

Yet, I still have this feeling that it's useless to worry about them. Again, nothing can stop them from putting a few holes into a human being if they want to. Probably this attitude on my behalf also has to do with the fact that, rightly or wrongly, I always feel more nonchalant and safe abroad than at home, as if somehow my being a stranger will protect me. A bit naive maybe but that's how I feel, and honestly I think it did a few times.

Here, everything is more ambiguous. From my experience in my adolescent years, you got these gangs of kids walking around you, saying you reek of shit, pushing you, asking for money, and you never really know what the fvck exactly they're up to. Are they gonna beat you up? Should you just kick the leader's arse so the others will back off? What if they have knives or chains? When is this shitface gonna stop buzzing in my ear? What will he do next? Most of the time they'll just go away after a while if you stay cool and keep a low profile (in my case at least : some of my friends have paid a much higher price). But that will have cost you a bad 15 minutes, and when you think about it later you can't help saying to yourself : "dammit, I should have ripped that mofo a second arsehole."

:D Provided he can accept that not every copper is a good copper, he'll survive it.
of course that is true...

I would never dispute that...

but some ppl here like to generalize by saying "all" because they have had problems in their past with law enforcement...

such is life......

We have many gangs here- Bloods, Crips, Folk Nation, Latin Kings...

Motorcycle gangs- Hells Angels, Outlaws, Chosen Few, Road Vultures.......

All the shootouts between these thugs have one element in common- DRUGS !!!

hey.. they have shootouts as well... wondering if they have handballs... or freekick..

hehe..

no, they use Uzi's and AK47 's as their "equipment", rather than shin-guards and soccer balls

I have a busted face compliments of a chav this weekend :groan: Some guy just laid me one in the face as he ran past. Busted nose, split lip. Nice.

He wasn't a kid, he was atleast 25. He didn't want money or cigs, he has more money than me probably. And I'd say they are more than useless kids. Race crimes are risen times 4 since London for example. It's common for people to be stabbed, even shot etc. It's certainly not just kids looking for smokes. That's just the beginning.

But yeah hardly to be compared with terrorists or gangs. Our police put them in jail.
