Blog: The man Juve want?
It has been a season to remember for Sampdoria and Gigi Del Neri. Steve Mitchell applauds the Doria boss
If Sampdoria can get over the finishing line next Sunday and seal their place in the Champions League then it will be a real triumph for their astute tactician Luigi Del Neri. As the end of season gongs are handed out this unassuming man from Udine deserves all the plaudits after a fabulous season at the helm of the club from Genoa.
Del Neri’s formula for success is not rocket science. At the start of the current campaign he consigned former Coach Walter Mazzarri’s 3-5-2 to the waste paper basket and went back to the tried and tested 4-4-2.
After a scintillating start to the season, the cracks started to appear around November and after seven straight defeats, Del Neri did the unthinkable by dropping club talisman Antonio Cassano and replacing him with Nicola Pozzi – the club then won its next four matches.
But it is in the transfer market where Del Neri has excelled. After first team goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi got injured, Milan goalkeeper Marco Storari was brought in during the January transfer window and has been outstanding ever since. During the same period, defender Luciano Zauri was drafted in from Lazio and midfielder Stefano Guberti arrived from Roma – the cost of all three was a big fat zero.
Working within the club’s tight financial constraints, Del Neri has produced miracles to get the squad to where it is. As well as the players already mentioned, team captain Angelo Palombo, Cassano himself and defender Stefano Lucchini also failed to trouble the expenditure columns of the club’s accounts.
As form improved, Cassano was restored to the team with great effect and it would also be fitting if Giampaolo Pazzini’s vital penalty, scored last weekend in the cauldron of the Renzo Barbera in Palermo, was the goal that sealed the Blucerchiati’s entry into Europe’s premier club competition. He’s been another of their key men this term.
It is a tribute to Del Neri’s success that after the game, the peninsula’s sports dailies were more concerned with asking the Coach about his future plans – Juventus having been strongly linked with him.
It would be harsh to deny Del Neri another chance with one of Italy’s premier clubs, having had a less than successful eight months in charge of Roma almost six years ago, but the thought of leading his current side into top European competition may be something that persuades him to stay in Genoa for another year.
The 59-year-old tactician has served his apprenticeship over the past 25 years in club management – his current position is the 17th of his career. Sampdoria’s loyal followers will hope that Del Neri decides to let his heart rule his head and attempt to give them a seat at Europe’s top table for the first time in 18 years.
