Donadoni 'expected' defeat
Roberto Donadoni insists he was content with the performance of his experimental Italy side in their defeat to Croatia.
“I can’t reprimand the players, because they did their duty and beyond. We knew the Croatians were in better physical shape and are very quick, so it wasn’t too surprising. Of course, nobody likes to lose, but in the circumstances it’s not a disaster,” he said after the 2-0 loss
The new Coach fielded seven debutants, including four in the starting line-up, and employed Fabio Liverani in a creative midfield role. However, the new Fiorentina signing was replaced after less than an hour.
“Nobody will be dropped because of this. Clearly, if we had been able to field these players for two or three games working together, then it would’ve been a different affair. There were a few mistakes, but they were mostly due to lack of experience and match fitness.”
Donadoni experimented with alternatives for the main squad, but the heroes of Germany return to the fold for two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Lithuania on September 2 and away to France on the 6th.
“The next games are going to be very important for us. We hope the World Cup players can come in with good fitness levels, even if they haven’t had the chance to play much since Berlin.”
This was the first ever Italy match played in Livorno, but the atmosphere was eerily silent throughout, as the local Amaranto fans staged a protest against the Federation in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal
“I heard applause and chants for Italy. The number of people here suggests they came to support the Azzurri, not for any other reason.”
FIGC director Gigi Riva also defended the side and his new Coach
We knew that this August date found our players in poor shape and without our first choice side, but it was a FIFA date and we had to take this opportunity, knowing full well there was the risk of defeat."
